Work from home. Home-Based Learning. #SGUnited. Social Distancing. These terms that used to carry no significance other than their definitions now have different implications. For some terms, it may even involve acts punishable by the law. With the frenzy over abiding by the laws recently set to protect our people from this formidable virus known as Covid-19, have we forgotten what it feels like to experience life in person, rather than over screens?
“People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how a character is built.” These words by Eleanor Roosevelt bring out the importance of experiences in life.
We live in a consumerist world. With just a few clicks, we can lay our hands on goodies and services. Taking advantage of the possibilities being offered in this regard, today’s parents tend to get their kids a lot of presents in the form of toys, gadgets and material goods. It is known that toys and play help children in developing their mental faculties. But are we overdoing it? Research suggests that too many toys can be detrimental and affect children in a negative way. There are some things which we can get for our children that are more valuable than material goods? Any idea of what they are?
Yes, you’re right – Experiences!
Gifting experiences
Scientific studies back the fact that gifting children experiences can be far-reaching and grant a tremendous number of positive benefits to them. Besides, isn’t it easy to give children experiences? Well, it is definitely not that tough to fill their curious minds and occupy their restless limbs. There are a number of things that parents can do – To spend time with their kids which provides immense benefit and valuable experiences to children. Toys or material gifts break or get discarded after a period of time, but memories and experiences stick with a person throughout their lifetime. Positive experiences can help to form the characters of children and inculcate positive values in them. Through experiences and the power of their subconscious minds, children observe, feel and are exposed to all there is available to them. They are able to comprehend matters in a better way with this approach. Truly, there is no better teacher than experience – which is why schools are now focusing more on experiential learning, to enable children to learn through their reflections of doing tasks..
What experiences can you give children?
As mentioned earlier, the very act of parents spending time with their kids can give the latter many positive experiences. Kids learn a lot by observing their parents. They also benefit immensely by feeling the care and love that they experience while spending time with their parents. This helps in emotional development. There are a number of activities that parents can try in order to give their children good experiences.
Office visits and family vacations
Letting children visit the office place of their parents is a good option. Though this is not appropriate in present Covid-19 times, this practice allows the child to understand the value of work and appreciate the efforts being put in by his/her parents.
Going on family vacations gives children a treasure trove of experiences. In addition to being able to spend quality and fun time with their families, travel and vacations help children to be exposed to different cultures and people. This widens their perspectives on life.
These two activities may be impossible to commit to during the Covid-19 period, but let’s aim to make this happen when we get through this period and defeat the Coronavirus!
Signing up for something challenging
We all have our comfort zones. Seldom do we feel inclined to step out of them. Is this good though? Sticking to comfort zones can restrict one’s potential in life. Fortunately, at a young age it is a lot easier to get over the tendency to remain in your comfort zone. Children should be nudged towards trying something that would put them out of their comfort zones. This could be signing up for a public speaking event or sticking to a daily fitness/exercise routine. Such experiences would help them immensely and instil in them a sense of positivity and confidence.
The experience of stories
Ever heard anyone say that each book is an experience? Stories and movies all can be an experience. Hearing old anecdotes from their parents, reading quality books and watching good movies can all be valuable experiences to children. The conditions for such experiences are easily available, and we should enjoy them when and while we can.
Measuring the results
So how do you measure the results of gifting your child experiences? Well, our methods would be insufficient for real-time analysis. But time will prove the efficacy of these positive interventions. In the long run, gifting kids with good experiences will make them better human beings. It will ensure that they have proper character formation and emotional development.
Investing in providing them with experiences is the best thing that parents can do for their kids. Instead of flooding our homes with toys and other goodies let’s make sure that children get valuable experiences that would be of good use to them throughout their lives. In the midst of all that is happening around us today, let us not forget the importance of experiences, sans the toys, the gadgets, let’s live in the moment and embrace what life truly has to offer.
