“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”
– Malcolm X
If anyone thinks that having an education is just about getting a degree or diploma, they could not be further than the truth! Education is not just about that. It’s about developing oneself as an individual, and honing one’s intellect and creativity. It is the process of acquiring skills and competencies to live a productive and fulfilling life. University education is a stepping stone to achieving all that. It is a gateway to finding the right job and opportunities in our society. It is an investment (if used to one’s benefit) that pays off for the rest of your life.
How a university education can be beneficial:
-
- Better career opportunities
A university education gives you access to career opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t be available to you. Most of the in-demand jobs have a university degree requirement. When you start working as soon as you leave secondary school, you might be able to earn money early and settle in life earlier than your classmates who go on to pursue a university education, but you might miss out on tremendous opportunities that can help you explore your potential and grow progressively.
-
- Financial Security
Jobs that require a university education naturally pay more. Also, having a university education will help you to be more competent at your job which can result in getting salary increments sooner. You will also be able to demand more for your work as your experience increases.
-
- Networking opportunities and a Great Investment for the Future
In college, you get to meet diverse individuals with whom you will exchange knowledge. This phase of life gives you an opportunity to make friends for life or maybe assets (human capital) to your profession.
A university education might seem like a waste of money to some people who are expecting immediate benefits, but it will give you good returns in the future.
-
- Help find your direction in life
Most children out of school won’t know what to do with their life and what job to pursue. University is where you will be exposed to a lot of new opportunities and information. You will also be more mature and knowledgeable to choose your career path rather than when you are out of school.
-
- Invaluable life experiences
Experiences are what shape your personality and life. Going to College offers you this life that you can’t experience elsewhere. You get the freedom and opportunity to learn and experience things that will shape your character and career.
-
- A certificate to prove your proficiency
Very often, there needs to be proof that you have completed a course to get opportunities in the professional world. A college degree grants you the proof to showcase your expertise to anyone who asks for it without having to go to the trouble of demonstrating your knowledge in the field.
Moreover, our society tends to value education a lot, and having a degree can boost your social standing, and people will then respect you and your opinions more.
Singapore MoE plans for university education for all
Education Minister Chan Chun has announced MoE’s intention to look into the matter of opening up more Universities. He also said that the government will look into increasing the current university Cohort Participation Rate (CPR)- which is the proportion of students in different age groups who are given a chance to learn at government-subsidized seats. Currently, the rate is 50% of which 40% is set aside for students fresh out of secondary school and the rest for working adults who go to college to get a degree education on a part-time basis. If the rate is reviewed and increased, it would be a huge opportunity for many aspiring young students as well as adults. Parents would not have to send their children to foreign universities paying a lot of money when they can get a good quality education in their home country. If the policy is made applicable to all possible university education and not limited to just four-year degree programs, it will be beneficial to a whole lot of people. Diversifying the types of education available to students and creating new opportunities is what we should be focusing on so that we can put the wide variety of talent and skill pool we have in our country to good use.
On that note, do consider these facts when you decide on whether your children or you need to get a university education. If you are an adult who is currently working, you should also take some time to consider whether you need to take a break to get your university education. We hope we have given you useful facts to think about. Wishing you all the best! 🙂
