“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” These words were spoken by Saint Augustine 1600 years ago. They are relevant even today and are sure to remain so for the foreseeable future. We spend our days working towards various goals – an examination, a job interview, getting a new house, starting a family, trying to gain a promotion at work and so on. But shouldn’t we also be taking some time to relax, look back and enjoy? Don’t we owe ourselves that much?
Yes, we do owe it to ourselves to pursue our happiness. And what better way to bring forth happiness into your life than through travel? True, in the current Covid-19 situation that is lingering at the back of everyone’s minds, travel is really not the solution to make ourselves happy for now. The aviation industry has taken a huge hit, staff members are facing a temporary suspension of jobs, and many of us consumers are left wondering when our next holiday trip would be, or the real question – will we even have a holiday during the year 2020?
Nevertheless, let’s not let Covid-19 dampen our spirits! This negative phase will pass, it’s all a matter of time. In the meantime, let’s talk about travel so that by the time this virus has passed, we can look forward to taking holiday trips again! 🙂
Traveling through the ages
When did humans begin to travel? Well, ever since they appeared on the face of this world. Traveling has been an essential aspect throughout the history of humankind. We started traveling on foot. The first humans are believed to have appeared on the continent of Africa. From there, they conquered every other habitable continent. Before transport facilities were developed, people traveled on foot to explore, spread religious teachings and chronicle events. Later came the ships that took explorers such as Marco Polo, Captain Cook and Zheng He to various corners of the world. (If you have never heard of these individuals, google them!)
What was the result of these travels and voyages? It led to a beautiful intermingling of cultures. How do you think our nation achieved the immense wealth of diversity that it possesses today? It was as a result of travel during different parts of history.
Today, traveling has become a lot more convenient. Jets and airplanes get us across continents in a matter of hours. Affordable tourist packages allow people to explore foreign regions. Advancement in communication technology has carried tales about local attractions to far off lands. This increases the desire for travel.
Why you should travel
Almost all of us today cherish the desire to travel to distant lands and enjoy the experiences these wonderful places can bring us. Can travel bring forth any benefits to you? Can it bring forth happiness?
To answer these questions let us first seek the answer to another question – what happens when you travel?
Traveling takes you to unfamiliar territories. It can immerse you in lands that you have never been to, with culture that may appear peculiar to you. It helps you meet different people, those who harbor habits which are unknown to you. For example, if you visit India, people there would greet you by joining their palms and saying “namaste”, “vanakkam”, etc. Travel to the Middle East and you might be greeted with the salutation “As-salamu alaykum” (peace be upon you). Be sure to return the greeting with a “wa ʿalaykumu s-salām”(peace be upon you too). You get to experience life from different perspectives.
Food that lifts your spirits
Different lands have different cuisines. Traveling helps you explore different kinds of food. A trip to Greece would let your taste buds feast on moussaka and tzatziki. Travel to Italy, the birthplace of pizza and pasta and fill your tummies with a number of different varieties of the two as well as other dishes. Spice things up on Mexican trips with some of the best hot food ever created. People generally say that “food is an emotion”. Well, when you travel, you’ll definitely get the opportunity to taste a whole myriad of emotions! 😉
Be wowed by the views
The breathtaking Niagara Falls on the US-Canada border, the Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru that appears to touch the skies, the grand ruins of the Colosseum at Rome, the awe-inspiring Eiffel Tower in Paris, the safaris in Africa … the list goes on and on. There are so many such spectacles across the globe that can touch our souls with their sheer beauty and resplendence. To see all of it in person, to touch, to feel with our bare hands, to take in the air will be an experience that cannot be explained. The bliss which accompanies this would be surreal.
Books that complement your academic learning
Learning, making new friends and seeing things differently
Now, all being said, to top it off, traveling fosters friendships! Traveling helps one get in touch with different cultures, and it helps to make friendships across the globe. It lets you understand the beauty of diversity. At the end of the day, it can make you a better human being, someone who is able to see the beauty in humanity and be happy and content at that. We become aware of the best practices followed in different nations, and are able to implement them in our own lives and homeland.
Traveling soothes the soul. Since time immemorial, people have packed their bags and gone out to travel in order to recover and revitalize their lives. Today the scope for travel has increased exponentially. We should and must make use of this. Every once in a while try to pack your bags, go out and explore the world that is brimming with life. Let’s learn to find bliss in travel and travel with bliss!
