Mom, where are my soccer socks? Mom, when will dinner be ready? Mom, do you remember where I left my doll? Sounds familiar? Mothers around the world are flooded with such questions on a daily basis. But when was the last time you came across a kid asking his father such questions? Let’s face it, even though we are in the 21st century, mothers continue to shoulder most of the burden at home. This happens even when they have full-time or part-time jobs.
What has happened post the Covid-19 outbreak? Well, things have only gotten tougher for all those mums out there.
The Juggling Act Of Mothers
Academic research continues to tell us that mothers spend a great deal more time taking care of the children and the household than fathers. The most recent of these studies, conducted by economists from the Universities of Cambridge and Zurich in the month of April reaffirms this. The average mother is spending 6 hours a day on childcare and home-based schooling activities while the average father is spending only a little more than 4 hours for the same. But we don’t need any premier university research to tell us all this. Almost all of us have been witnessing this on a daily basis. Yes, the halt in normal life, including the temporary closedown of childcare centres and preschools have led to mothers having to shoulder added responsibilities.
On top of this, working mothers have to ensure that they meet their work targets from home as well. There is no room for complacency here. Since the pandemic struck, mothers are juggling childcare, household chores, work and tons of other stuff on a scale that is unimaginable.
What is the impact?
Doesn’t all this take a toll on our mothers? It surely does. Shouldering responsibilities of such a scale means that they are unable to find time for leisure. Mothers end up being put under immense stress. This can affect their health – physically, mentally and psychologically. Materially, having to put in more time for child care and household activity means that their career prospects can be hit.
What can you do?
How many of us appreciate the women in our lives for all the extra effort they put in? Appreciation has been long overdue. The past few weeks have helped us spend more time with our families. Hopefully, this has made us more understanding towards the struggles of the mothers in our homes.
Put in a bit of effort. Let us tell our mothers that we love them and that we appreciate the selfless effort that they put in for us. Maybe you could throw a surprise (immediate) family party for your mother with what (and who) is available at home.
But appreciation shouldn’t just be limited to words or one-off actions. Let everyone in the household chip in and start sharing household chores in a more equitable manner. The efforts towards reducing the burden of our mothers are long overdue. It would be good if at least we all start now. Let’s use this period of lockdown to set things straight. Let’s start appreciating our mothers more and put in more effort to share the housework at home. Let’s be grateful for these wonderful women in our life and make sure that they are able to live each day (especially Mother’s Day) to the fullest as well!
Wishing all Mothers a Happy and Blessed Mother’s Day! 🙂
