“Mum, I’m bored!” Sounds familiar? Does your life seem like some dystopian Hollywood movie all of a sudden? Do the headlines that keep appearing on news channels and the alarming hashtags in your social media feed put you in a state of fear or concern? The coronavirus pandemic has brought life to a standstill all around the world. Yes, that’s right, you and I are not the select few, we are all in this together. #SGUnited
The number of COVID-19 infected patients, as well as the deaths due to the pandemic, are increasing at an alarming rate. As we all know, many nations have gone into lockdowns, asking their citizens to remain indoors for weeks or months. Singapore has announced our own quarantine period from April 7 till May 4.
Yes, these are testing times. But there is more to it than this. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought everything to a pause, for an indefinite period of time. Over the past few months, people across the globe have been able to view their lives from a different perspective. There is a lot to learn from this pandemic and also, a lot that we can do in support of the efforts to combat it.
The responsibility on our shoulders
This is our fight. Every human being on the face of this planet is a soldier in the war against COVID-19. How do we fulfil our duty in this battle? The solution to this crisis is unity. We need to unite and channel our efforts in one direction. The doctors, nurses and other medical staff with their tireless efforts, the administrators via proactive policymaking, the police personnel with their effective implementation of the safety measures, the people engaged in ensuring that essential goods and services are made available, every other person who stays indoors responsibly and follows measures that prevent the spread of the virus – all these categories of people are playing important roles. If any one of us fails to live up to our responsibility then it would affect the efforts of the others.
For all of us who are supposed to stay inside our homes the plan is clear. Stay inside and make sure that you come out of this pandemic a different person. What do we mean by the last part?
The lessons from COVID-19
As we spend our days indoors we must not fail to take notice of the things that have become evident. The pandemic has reaffirmed the true importance of life. Straddled with deadlines at work or school, how many of us have forgotten to live our lives? How many of us have not been able to make time for our families? How much time have we wasted on silly things?
This pandemic has showcased the beauty of humanity – coming together collectively to raise funds for charities, doing our part for the underprivileged. However, we also have seen how the ugly side of people too surfaced during this period of time. Instead of being appreciative of the people who have contributed to building the foundation of our country, i.e. teachers or migrant workers, some of us have expressed dissatisfaction at their efforts, regardless whether it is for work, or how they have led their lives. Let’s be honest, given a choice, all of us would not want to be stuck with dealing with this pandemic. So, instead of pointing fingers and spreading negativity, why not be the spark in each other’s lives, and spread love?
COVID-19 has made evident that there is nothing more important than love and family. It has taught us the true value of life.
Many of us are at the moment spending a lot more time with our families. We have learned that whatever happens, we need to make time for the people whom we care about

For all those people working from home, a bit of escapism can lighten up your otherwise ordinary work routine. In an article recently penned by Trixia Enriquez Carungcong, she said that dressing up on a Friday and posting about it on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #DressUpFriday can liven your spirits. In a dull period like this, even a slight change in the way you carry out your daily activities can transform the way you look at life.
Chart out a schedule for the next month. Allocate enough time for various activities. Catch up on the things that you missed, reminisce about the beautiful memories that you shared. Support each other with your kind words.
To sum it all up, if at the end of this pandemic you haven’t learnt anything new, you should take it as a big failure on your part.
The world will never be the same post COVID-19. But that thought shouldn’t dampen our spirits. We will overcome this pandemic and when that happens, we must stroll into the new world as “reborn people”. We must be able to value life more, make more time for our loved ones and be better versions of ourselves. Let us use these days to hone our skills, pick up new ones and excel at whatever we do. There is truly a light at the end of this tunnel and as we journey towards it. Let us fight the pandemic from within our homes. May we emerge with greater excellence that proves that no disaster can destroy our spirit!
