“We cannot always build the world for the youths, but we can build our youths for the future.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt once said. These are testing times indeed for all of us. But the youth of the world, who are going through a transition period, have in particular been left anxious by the Covid-19 pandemic. For some of them at least, the future looks dull and this worries them. In the middle of an unprecedented crisis, what do these young ones truly feel?
Recent findings by the National Youth Council of Singapore reveal that the pandemic has affected their mental well-being. The study points at three major issues that cause distress – fears about their future, the possibility of a financial crisis, and the inability to access services. But this has not stopped them from being compassionate at a time it is needed most! From leading initiatives such as delivering food to the needy, to giving free tuition to graduating students, youths from all across the nation are stepping up to do their part for the society. Because of their willingness to put society before self, it is important to look at how they think and feel, and do our part to change things around.
Let’s face reality!
The world was approaching an economic crisis even before Covid-19 started to weave terror. The pandemic has only deepened it. Let’s take a look at China, where it all began. Millions who graduated this summer are looking at a worrying number of firms that are either closed or not ready to hire. No recruiters arrived at campuses this time. The youth cannot afford unemployment, and the firms cannot afford new recruitments. With the small and medium-sized enterprises taking a huge hit, only the big companies and the government can offer jobs now.
The same situation is witnessed by youth across the globe. Those affected include those who are just out of college as well as the ones who have lost their jobs recently. With few jobs and many jobseekers, post Covid-19 the youth will have to face stiff competition.
Can young minds cope with the crisis?
The young are most vulnerable to mental health issues especially at such a time of crisis. What happens when you do not know what is ahead and have no control over what is going on? The unexpected change in exams and graduation schedules along with bleak career prospects has increased anxiety. The Youth Council of Singapore expects a rise in issues concerning mental health. The pandemic and the precautionary lockdown have had an impact on young minds. As we come out of this pandemic we will need to put a spirited fight against these issues as well.
Too Young, Too Kind
At the same time, a look at the number of young people who turned into social service and charity during this disheartening crisis would leave us amazed. How is the youth faring here? Their response to circuit breaker measures (besides what has been shared above) includes cooking food for migrant workers and donating their pocket money to Homes for Senior Citizens. There are plenty like the young Sylvia Wong who helped a 61-year old by providing necessities. They not only make masks but also make sure their family members abide by the instructions given by the authorities. They behave responsibly online and offline to help the world go through the crisis in an easier manner. Don’t these small great deeds make our spaces more pleasant?
Hope will triumph
There is no doubt that the crisis will not end with the departure of the disease. It will have longer impacts on the youth. But being kind and committed is probably the only way forward. Like any other crisis, there could be positive outcomes from this one too. It could lead to a restructuring of our economy and culture in a way that we are united and no one is left alone. There is gloom all over the world and it is okay to have some inside you too. But we must remember that there is no problem without a solution. With our hearts and minds in the right place, we will be able to tide over every hurdle that pops up – we will get through this together! 🙂
