“Wingardium leviosa!” Ask any Harry Potter fan if they know any magical spells, and this will most probably be the first spell that comes to mind. Ever since we were first introduced to the Wizarding World—taken from 4 Privet Drive to a fantastic universe where you can ride broomsticks, disappear and reappear anywhere and learn magic instead of math at school, who hasn’t wished that it was all real? It would be a dream come true to play Quidditch, choose your wand and buy enchanted pranks. How many of us are guilty of wanting to live the magic that JK Rowling created?
Universal Studios around the world have recreated the wizarding experience in Harry Potter World. While unfortunately you can’t quite enter Hogwarts in Sentosa yet, the Universal Studios theme parks in Japan, Hollywood and Orlando all transport you instantly into Harry Potter’s universe. The Japan and Hollywood locations, however, are smaller; head to Orlando, Florida for the full immersive experience.
This theme park lets you explore Diagon Alley, the wizard shopping street, as well as Hogsmeade, the magical village where Harry, Ron, and Hermione go on weekends from school. There, you can enter every shop from Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes to Ollivander’s wand shop. In Ollivander’s, a wand chooses you during a live show. If you pay a little extra for it, you can even use the wand to cast spells at different locations around the park—just remember, it’s leviosa, not leviosar! At Gringotts, you can exchange US dollars for Gringotts notes and use them at restaurants in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley.
JK Rowling’s delicious descriptions of the Hogwarts feasts and Hogsmeade pubs were some of the most compelling parts of the books by far, and Harry Potter World brings them to life. Butterbeer is definitely an option, or three—you can try it hot, cold, or even as a soft-serve ice cream. But that’s not all—cafes there also offer Pumpkin Juice (it’s like drinking a pumpkin pie) and The Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade even has a miniaturized version of the famous Hogwarts Great Feast for hungry stomachs!
At the end of the day, though, this is a theme park—and the rides can’t be missed here. Over the series, Harry’s death-defying adventures thrilled us all. Harry Potter World lets you experience them for yourself. In the last book (spoilers!), Harry escapes from Gringotts on a dragon, holding one of the last pieces needed to defeat Voldemort. In Harry Potter World, you can share the journey too in Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts—a steel roller coaster that brings you face-to-face with Bellatrix Lestrange and He Who Must Not Be Named over the long indoor track.
For so many people today, Harry Potter was our introduction to reading. It showed us that just words can take you somewhere else and carry you along fabulous adventures. It taught us bravery and friendship and the importance of making the difficult choices. All of this can be found in what seems like “just” a fantasy story – but the sheer size of Harry Potter World shows us it’s not. Harry Potter World lets you remember why we fell in love with these books in the first place and pays homage to the journey the books took us all on. The experience in Orlando is the perfect finale to that journey.
If your child has yet to read Harry Potter, it may be time to take an afternoon off from studying—they have a train to catch at platform 9 and ¾ on the Hogwarts Express.
