“Technology is a useful servant, but a dangerous master”. This quote is especially apt in a society like ours today, where we are all surrounded by technology. From our personal laptops, tablets and phones, and massive leaps in the field of Medicine, Science and Education, there are plenty of advantages that technology has brought into our lives. However, it is important that we use technology in the right way. Just like two sides of a coin, technology does come with its own share of advantages and disadvantages. We need to make sure we are in total control over technology and it isn’t the other way around.
As teenagers who engage mostly through Instagram or Facebook, we are more often carried away by the number of likes and comments our posts get on these social media platforms. But, do we realize that all the data that we share on the web can be misused in one way or the other?
Let us take a look at a few alarming aspects of technology and healthier ways to use it.
Staying safe in the glamorous world
We all live in a competitive world. Knowingly or unknowingly, we fall prey to this “competition”. We take photographs and post them, wishing that we get more likes as compared to our friends. But, what we forget is that if we are not careful, the information that we share on the internet can be used against us. Whenever you fill the “about us” section of any social media platform, post images or share information, you need to realize that that particular platform is going to collect all the information that you have provided and use it for some other purpose. So, we need to be very particular about the information we share online, and be wary of how this information can be used against us.
“Privacy” (or the lack of 🤫)
Ever wondered why you get so many spam emails from different “unknown” companies? Or, you could ask your dad about the spam emails he receives every single day. The information that we have provided in the online space is (very often) sold to other companies. We should understand that the information we provide on the open online space is like handing over the key to our door of information to the open world. Now, you need to decide what information you are willing to disclose as that may eventually get out to the eyes of the public.
Have you heard about the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica Scandal? If you haven’t read about it yet, you should!
Cambridge Analytica, the consulting firm that worked for Trump’s campaign, was provided information from Facebook about 87 million Facebook Profiles.
Be careful about online games
Most social media platforms come with tons of free games. Have you noticed that they throw a pop-up – “Request to Access Basic Personal Information” and then you click “Ok” to all the questions they ask you just to start playing the game? Well, you should understand that when you click “Ok”, the “information is money” for most companies. No one develops a game and sells it for free without any reason.
So, next time you download an application or game onto your mobile or laptop, make sure you read the “privacy policy” and “terms of use” sections before you start to engage in them.
Steps taken by the Government
Governments worldwide are taking note of the data’s increasingly vital role in daily life. The European Union (EU), in 2016, passed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) under which consumers across the EU were given the right to access and correct data gathered about them. A similar kind of law was passed in California under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
Well, is technology all about negativity then?
Not at all!
Handle with care!
“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”. – Albert Einstein
There are two ways to decipher the above quote.
- Technology has exceeded our humanity – So, we can make use of it in the right way and make our lives simpler.
- Technology has exceeded our humanity – You use it in the wrong way and it takes control over you.
It is important that we follow the first path. There are countless benefits of technology, especially in the field of education. With online learning, you can learn from the comfort of your place. No longer do you have to travel long distances and take up classes. This “Anytime-Anywhere” mode of learning can be highly helpful for students looking to explore more. You can also take up online tuition for specific subjects such as English, Science, and Maths and widen your knowledge on specific subject topics. In fact, online tuition complements your classroom learning experience.
Regulate and limit our usage
Like many of the things that you love, including favourite foods such as pizza or chocolates, technology can be great – but only when used in moderation. The main problems with technology arise from misuse and lack of acknowledgement about how much technology is “too much”. This is a lesson for us all – we need to regulate and limit our technological use so that we’ll be able to reap the positive effects, without suffering from the detriments!
