“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”
Yes, we have all heard these words at some point in time. But do you happen to notice that they are becoming increasingly true today? We live in an age powered by technology and convenience. But take a look at the workplace, the sphere of academics, and any other field of relevance. There is a common thread running through every single sector – COMPETITION!
The writing on the wall is clear, our children are set to grow up into an era of even more heightened competition.
What does that mean?
As parents, what do we wish for our kids? We want them to excel in their lives and be happy. So, what should be their focus in such a competitive world? Parents need to ensure that their kids have the skills to cope up with and thrive in a world of competition. Now, what is the most essential of these skills?
Self-reliance – the key to success
You need to be able to take care of your things on your own. In other words, you need to be ‘self-reliant’. Kids need to acquire the skill of being independent and self-reliant right from a young age. This is the factor that can make your kids stand out and leverage best on the opportunities that the world puts forward today. Of course, teamwork and social skills are always going to be important but in the absence of self-reliance in certain core areas, we can simply not realize our true potential.
Start from the basics
So, how do you go about with the lessons in self-reliance? Homes are the right place to begin and parents are by all estimates the ideal teachers or instructors. Ok, before we get into the details, here’s a disclaimer to all those parents out there – you have got to practice and be seen to be practicing the lessons of self-reliance that you seek to impart to your kids. This would help the lessons reach your kids in a more substantial manner.
Self-reliance 101 is all about getting your kids to do simple tasks related to their lives in a disciplined and responsible manner. This includes things like making their bed, keeping their rooms neat and tidy, learning to cook a simple breakfast, and taking up responsibility with regard to academics.
It’s about creating habits
The thing to remember here is that you are looking to inculcate habits in children, not one-off activities. With a bit of initial nudging, parents must be able to impress upon their kids the need to follow such good practices. Sit down with your kids and explain to them the need to shoulder more responsibility and take more control of their lives. Speak to them about the benefits that such practices can bring about.
When you see a positive response, don’t forget to compliment your child on it. Also, parents must keep a watchful eye to ensure that kids do not get complacent as time passes. Repeat and reinforce the message of self-reliance.
Moving beyond the mundane
Once you have got the basics through, the focus can move on to other critical aspects. Self-reliance in learning is the most vital trait that one has to possess today. Now, this is not to say that class-based learning, tutors, and the other aspects of today’s educational systems have no relevance. Self-reliance in learning complements the existing educational frameworks. While doing so, it gives you that extra advantage.
A self-reliant learner can motivate himself to learn new things and acquire novel skills. It gives one the ability to unlearn and relearn, both vital skills in today’s world of rapid technological transition.
We need to teach our kids to think critically, to go beyond their textbook curricula, and leverage the wide array of novel educational opportunities that are available to them. They are going to face an age where they will be required to rethink, innovate, and pick up skills on short notice.
The world ahead is filled with surprises and opportunities. To make sure that our kids make the most of it, parents need to be proactive and nurture the right skills in them. Let’s gift our kids happy and fulfilling futures! 🙂
