For more than a month now, the world has been discussing only one thing – COVID-19. The coronavirus pandemic has brought life to a standstill. The virus which made its appearance in China in December 2019 has conquered the globe over the past few months. As of 31st March 2020, more than 850,000 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported. The death toll has crossed 42,000. In Singapore, cases have crossed a thousand as the nation witnesses a surge in community transmission.
What is happening across the globe? Are our prospects gloomy? What should we be doing right now to combat this life-threatening issue? And the question on everyone’s minds – when will this end, if ever?
What is happening right now?
Right now the pandemic does not appear to be subsiding. Cases of COVID-19 are increasing with each day. Even the most advanced countries appear to be in tough spots with great losses of lives. Many nations have announced partial or total lockdowns to check the surge of the coronavirus. People are asked to remain inside their homes. If they are allowed to go out then they are asked to maintain strict social distancing practices. The global economy has been hit really badly and it looks like we will be facing the negative fallouts for quite some time to come.
But more than all this, the most devastating impact of COVID-19 is that a large number of people have lost their loved ones. Some of them didn’t even get a proper chance to say goodbye to their dear ones. COVID-19 came from nowhere and it has altered our lives beyond recognition.
What to look forward to?
We still have our backs to the wall. It is going to take a while before we bring things under control. This would require a surreal effort on the part of our healthcare apparatus, leaders as well as the general public. The economic repercussions of this phase will be felt even longer. Many might face the prospects of losing their jobs. Putting the trauma of these days behind is also going to be a significant challenge. For the next few weeks or months, lockdowns and restrictions would in all likelihood be the new normal.
The rays of hope
Will we conquer this unprecedented crisis? The stories of grit and determination that come to us from around the globe reaffirm the fact that we will indeed tide over this pandemic. Yes, there have been immeasurable losses. But there have also been concerted efforts and resistance. Across the globe, doctors, nurses, paramedics, hospital staff, ambulance drivers and other medical staff have been working round the clock. Many patients who faced serious issues and almost lost their lives have fought back with the help of our medical practitioners and have since regained their lives. Our leaders, policymakers and administrators are working tirelessly to make sure that adequate safety measures are being taken to safeguard the public and bring the situation under control. The role of law enforcement agencies and their personnel is beyond praise. These stories touch our hearts and make us believe that we can survive this.
What should we be doing?
In these challenging times, what should each one of us be doing? This is our fight. Each one of us has a role to play. But this is a fight that we have never witnessed before. What is our responsibility in this great fight? We need to make ourselves aware of the gravity of the situation and wholeheartedly support the measures which are being taken by our government. Instructions given by authorities must be followed and we must ensure that we take necessary precautions including social distancing and washing our hands periodically to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. Our role is to unite in cooperation. If we fulfil this great responsibility then we will be able to save humanity from the worst crisis that has hit it in decades. We owe it to ourselves, we owe it to the medical staff who are toiling without rest and we cannot settle for any compromise.
COVID-19 has devastated us. But it has reminded us of the immense potential which we hold within ourselves as well. The world is not going to be the same again. But we can make sure that we build it back piece by piece. There is a light at the end of this tunnel. We have to ensure that we do not falter in our journey towards this light. Given time, faith and unity, this too will pass. We can and shall overcome this! #SGUnited
