Striking the right ‘tuition balance’

Posted on December 10, 2019May 9, 2020 by 88tuition.com

How much do you spend on tuition for your child? What is your personal opinion about the efficacy of enrolling your child for tuition? Do you think that you are spending too much? Do you think that tuition is acting as an extra burden on your child?

A recent analysis of national data shows that Singaporeans spent around $1.4 billion on tuition for their kids during the last year. There is a debate around the topic of ‘tuitions’ and this debate has multiple facets to it. Ranging from costs to emotional reactions and efficiency, there are a number of things regarding tuition that appear to be controversial to many. Let’s delve a bit into this issue, shall we?

Tuitions – a part of the Singaporean success story

Singapore’s students are amongst the best when it comes to academic skills. The PISA 2018 rankings put us in second place. We are also an educational hub. Proper planning and efficient implementation of educational initiatives have helped us achieve all this. However, to neglect the role of tuition centers in this grand success would be a folly. Surely our children have benefited immensely from efficient tuition which has helped them get a better hold of their academic courses.

The sentiments against tuition

A recent survey by the Straits Times says that more than half of the primary school students that enrol for tuition do so at the age of seven or earlier. It is also found that a large number of our children attend more than 4 hours of tuition per week. Is this leading to our children losing out on their childhood? This is exactly what a good number of critics point out. Many claim that tuition increases fatigue, anxiety, and revulsion towards studies.

Another significant point that is made is about the cost. We find a trend of increased spending on tuition with an increase in family income. Even amongst the people who earn comparatively less, there is a sizeable chunk who are ready to spend huge sums on tuition for their children. Thus, we find the arguments about income-based disparities regarding access to tuition and the robbing of the pension funds of parents who do not want their children to be left behind.

Addressing the allegations

It is true that too much tuition is bad tuition. It would also be wrong to say that every tuition center in the nation is offering anxiety-free tuition to pupils without making them work inexorably long hours. But to rate the entire spectrum of tuition providers based on the actions of certain erring ones would give us an extremely inaccurate picture. In fact, there are many tuition providers within the nation who have been successful in striking the right balance with the tuition programmes that they offer.

Striking the right balance

In its most efficient avatar, tuition helps improve results by giving students what they need and empowering them. In its right approach, it would be cognizant of the age of the student and the need to provide time for his emotional needs and vital activities such as leisure and play.

Tuition is an enabling activity. It ensures that your child develops a strong understanding of the foundation of the subject topics and builds up from there carefully with a variety of innovative methods. For younger children, activity is a central aspect that efficient tuition centers ingeniously deploy. They incorporate games and fun activities to enable the process of learning.

Online tuition is a revolution in itself and has redefined the process of learning. It has brought a great deal of flexibility to learning which ensures greater efficiency and a decreased amount of anxiety. A cost-based analysis would reveal that they don’t eat up much into family budgets either. Online tuition also cuts down the need for commuting and gives both parents and students with more time for other activities.

Thus, efficient tuition does not have to be highly expensive nor does it have to rob your children of their childhood. The trick lies in picking tuition centers that can strike the right tuition balance. The onus is thus on us parents to find the right option for our children.
