“Prevention is better than cure”.
Many of us have grown up with this quote often repeated by our parents. Prevention is definitely better than cure, especially in the current times that we are in. With the global pandemic situation still not under control, nations across the world are requesting their people to get vaccinated. They are manufacturing and procuring vaccines from other nations so that their people get their shot of vaccine.
For the world to return to normal, everyone must become immune to the risk of getting affected and achieve herd immunity. And, vaccination is the best way to do that.
With vaccines administered all over, there have been many reports of people getting affected by side effects. Everyone will not be affected by side effects, but many will be.
With the vaccine program extended to include students and the Health Sciences Authority approving the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for those aged 12 to 15, the number of children receiving the vaccine will increase in the coming days. You must be aware of the side effects it can have on you and your children, especially with vaccination dates coinciding with or being on a date close to the national oral exams or other exams. The side effects can make it harder for the students to prepare or even perform well in the exams. So, proper caution must be exercised.
So, what side effects can arise in the aftermath of one receiving a vaccination for Covid?
The most common side effects may include:
- Pain and discomfort at the injection site
- Swelling – some people can develop itching and rashes too.
- Tiredness – You might feel unusually drowsy or tired all the time.
- Headache
- Muscle pain – some people experience aches all over the body.
- Chills
- Fever
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
People usually experience one or more of these effects. Other side effects can arise too. But, these are the most common ones.
Should you worry?
It is common for a healthy body to react, and this shows that the vaccine is working. These symptoms are moderate and will go away after a few days. Also, having no side effects is not a thing to get worried over either. But, if the ailments persist and worsen after a few days, seek medical attention. Otherwise, you will be back to yourself in a few days.
What can you do?
Well, there are many things that you can do to control or cope with the side effects:
- Ask your doctor for advice. If you have any doubts about the side effects or have any previous health conditions, discuss with your medical practitioner about it before scheduling a vaccine appointment.
- If you have swelling or pain at the vaccinated site, apply a wet cloth over the area. Sometimes, a rash can appear in the area about 7 days after the vaccination.
- In the case of your children, keep an eye on their condition for a few days. Ensure that they are getting enough sleep and rest. They might not be able to concentrate on their studies or exam preparation during that time. Talk to them and comfort them so that they don’t feel anxious about it.
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids and maintain a balanced diet.
- Exercise – Non-strenuous exercise for the whole body, and in particular, for your arms, can help relieve the pain and muscle aches. Constantly moving or flexing your arms can help alleviate the pain.
- Avoid wearing tight clothes and garments. It will help in avoiding overheating.
- If possible, try to take a day or two off and rest well. If multiple family members are affected by the side effects, it would be better for you to stay at home. You can offer comfort and assistance to each other and spend some quality family time together too.
- The second dose might have more side effects than the first one. So, if you were affected very badly by the after-effects of the first, consult your doctor before getting the second dose. Some people can be allergic to the vaccine, so take note of the side-effects and seek medical assistance if required.
These side effects usually last a few days and can cause you some discomfort. But, it is better to get it done. The advantages of getting vaccinated far outweigh the mild side effects that might affect you.
There is so much misleading information and misconceptions about vaccines. People get discouraged seeing it. But, it is vital that you understand the need for it and why it is the only way forward towards getting back to normal.
So, get vaccinated. Book an appointment for yourself and your family as soon as possible! 🙂
