Children between 5 and 11 are now eligible to get vaccinated as Singapore extends its vaccine program to the young ones. The vaccine rollout began on 27 December 2021, and covers more than 3,00,000 children. As we all know, Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine is the approved vaccination for children, and the dosage is set at one-third of that of an adult.
Many of you might have some questions and concerns regarding the vaccination program for children. We have some pointers to help you out.
The Vaccination program
The program is open to all children who are Singapore Citizens (SC), Permanent Residents (PR) and long-term pass holders (LTPH). As per the MoE report, about 94% of children between the age of 12 to 19 have been vaccinated. The objective of extending the program is to ensure that children can receive proper education at schools thereby restoring normalcy, and also, part of the larger national efforts to keep our children, our families and the wider community safe.
To ensure equal access to all citizens, 15 designated vaccine centres (VCs) will be open throughout the country. Of these, 7 will start operations from 27 December 2021, 7 more will commence operations from 3 January 2022 and the final one located within Yusof Ishak Secondary School (YISS) will start operations from 11 January 2022. You can look up the vaccination centres on the MoE website.
How to register?
The registration will roll out progressively based on different age groups. Elder children will be allotted slots first. The first slot is for children born between 2009 to 2012, followed by those born between 2013-2017.
From December 22, parents/guardians of P4 to P6 students will be receiving a unique link via SMS to sign up for vaccination. For children born between 2009 to 2012, the registration link will be sent from December 27 onwards. If your children are not enrolled in an MoE institution, you can register for vaccination from December 27 on https://child.vaccine.gov.sg/. If your child is studying in an MoE institution but hasn’t received a link, you can register using the website too.
Registration for P1 to P3 students of the 2022 batch in the MoE institution can be done from January 3 onwards. All others can register from the site from January 10.

Why should you vaccinate your children?
Being parents, it is natural to have doubts when it comes to matters of your child’s health. People often think that since children only get a mild case of the disease, there is no need to get them vaccinated and risk the side effects. There is more to the situation than you think.
Experts advise administering the vaccination to children to reduce the risk of serious illness in case they get infected in the future. With the recent reports of Omicron and other mutations fast-spreading, there is fear among the masses. In such a situation, getting children vaccinated would be the right thing to do. The vaccination program being extended to children below 12 can help reduce the risk of transmission and also help protect those who are medically ineligible for vaccination. Children also have a good chance of developing stronger immunity if vaccinated early.
The Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine approved for vaccinating children has shown to be 90.7% effective. Furthermore, studies have shown that children aged 5 to 11 experienced fewer side effects compared to other age groups.
The USA, Israel, and countries in Europe have been vaccinating children using the Pfizer vaccine along with Canada, Australia, and other countries are soon to follow.
What if my child is allergic to the vaccine or develops side effects?
After receiving the vaccination, children will be under a 30 minute observation period at the vaccination centre and any signs of an allergic reaction will be looked upon. During the following days, parents should keep a close watch on the health of their children. It is natural for a few to develop a fever and experience fatigue or muscle aches. These can happen in the case of regular childhood vaccines too. There is no need to worry. Let your children rest and make sure they do not exert themselves for the next two weeks. If serious symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness, or persistent fever show no sign of going down, consult a doctor immediately.
How to get your children ready?
Talk to your child about the vaccination. They must be informed about it. If your children are too young to comprehend it, reassure them that it is something for their good and that they are going to be alright. Promise to buy them some dessert or their favourite snacks right after the vaccination. Telling them early on and mentally preparing them can make it easier when you take them for vaccination.
Consult with your child’s school authorities if you need any support or help regarding registration.
We hope all your doubts have been resolved. Let’s work together in our fight against Covid-19. Get our children vaccinated whenever earliest possible, and start the new year on a healthy note. We are all in this together!
