With the digital world expanding to pervade every nook and corner of our lives, using mobile phones have made it much easier to connect with people and have access to the web in the palm of our hands. Yet, as a parent, you will be concerned about the impact such devices can have on your child. These days even toddlers are amused with mobile phones. If your children ask you to buy them one, it should not come as a surprise to you. Also, we have parents amongst us who hand over their mobile phones to their children so that they can relax for a while.
Before buying a mobile phone for your children, there are many factors you have to consider and facts you need to look upon. We have some pointers to help you reach a decision before your young ones start badgering you for one.
Assess your children’s capabilities
Once you have thought about why your children would need a phone, think about whether your children are responsible and mature enough to put it to good use. Age is not a measure of how mature someone is. Observe your children’s behaviour and interests. See how they take care of their belongings and how responsibly they act. It is wise to buy a responsible 11-year-old a phone than an irresponsible 15 year old one.
Which phone to buy?
Choose a mobile phone best suited for their needs alone. If you need one to call and get in touch with your child, get them a feature phone with a prepaid call and SMS plan. Many companies offer child-friendly phones that have limited functionality with parental control features. If your children need a better-performing phone with more features, consider looking at refurbished or hand-me-downs as their first phones. It is better not to buy your children expensive devices until they have gotten used to using mobile phones responsibly. You can go for slightly more affordable models from brands like Oppo, Realme and Xiaomi. They offer good features at a pocket-friendly rate that can match high-end phones.
What to do after buying your children a phone?
- If your children are very young they will need supervision. Install parental control apps to keep track of their activities and protect them from making any mistakes, but make sure you aren’t suffocating them. Make sure you let your kids know that you trust them. It will ensure that your children grow up respecting you.
- Teach your children proper phone etiquette. Teach them how to behave while talking on the phone and when and where they shouldn’t use their phones.
- Educate them about all the possible threats they might face while using a smartphone and the internet. Make sure they understand what cyberbullying is and what to do if they are targeted.
- Think about what data and call plan your children might need. Set limits on data they can use. It will help them not spend too much time on the internet.
- Set tech-free areas in your home where your children are not allowed to use their devices which ensures they should spend time with their family and engage in other activities as well.
In today’s world, phones have become symbols of status, pride, and wealth. Some parents feel like their children having the latest smartphones in their hands will make people view them in awe. Try not to fall into these trends and buy your children mobile phones that are suitable for their immediate needs only. Remember that instead of leading lives on our mobile phones, we should encourage our kids to live in the moment and enjoy the presence of life. All the best! 🙂
