Celebrating Hari Raya
Selamat Hari Raya! Hari Raya is a traditional festival for Muslims. It is celebrated in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. As a celebration, Hari Raya has many traditions and customs associated with it.
Celebrations start with the sighting of the new moon and end on Eid ul-Fitr, which is a three-day celebration that includes prayers and exchanging gifts. The most important part of Hari Raya celebrations is “open houses” where families gather to feast on delicious food and share in each other’s company.
Story
The origins of Hari Raya can be traced back to the time when Prophet Muhammad was alive and well, and he was leading his people in prayer during Ramadan. One day, he saw a few men who had not yet broken their fasts and were about to do so after sunset. He asked them if they were going to break their fasts before nightfall and they said yes. He then told them that they are free from fasting for this day because it is too hot outside, but that they must make up for this.
Hari Raya is a time to celebrate and be thankful for the blessings that we have been given. It is a time to remember the story of Prophet Muhammad and his family, and their journey from Mecca to Medina.
The Hari Raya celebration has roots in the history of Islam. Muslims believe that this day marks when Allah revealed the first verses of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad. This day also marks the end of Ramadan, a period where Muslims fast from dawn till dusk every day for 30 days.
Traditions and Celebrations
The day of Eid is a day of joy and festivity. People are not allowed to fast on the day and are supposed to celebrate, be happy, spend time with family and community, and indulge in acts of charity and companionship. There are different traditions and practices associated with the day.
Eid Salah
The day of Hari Raya Puasa has a special congregational prayer that all Muslims attend. It is done in mosques or open public places where hundreds or thousands of devotees come together to offer prayer and exchange symbolic gestures of brotherhood and companionship. Since the pandemic has not fully come down, take proper precautions when attending the prayers.
Time with friends and family
This occasion is a day of love and brotherhood. People who come for the Eid Salah, exchange hugs and handshakes, deepening the bond of brotherhood and friendship between them. Children and family members receive gifts and sweets on this day. New dresses are purchased to celebrate this day. So, make sure to spend quality time with your family and relatives.
Special Food
The day of Hari Raya Puasa is also celebrated by preparing special meals to celebrate the end of the month-long fasting. Sweets, meat dishes, and drinks are prepared and exchanged. If you have non-Muslim friends, make sure to invite them to take part in the festivity and indulge in the special food you have prepared.
Celebrate Mindfully
There are many ways to celebrate the festivity, and it does not require extravagant planning to have a fun-filled occasion!
How to celebrate?
- Visit family and friends
- Buy new and matching clothes for you and your family.
- Visit the mosque and offer your prayers.
- Check out local markets and stalls opened as part of the celebration
- Check out online markets for special deals and offers for the day
- Help those in need. Buy groceries or food for someone who you know is struggling.
- Offer green packets filled with cash to children and your elders to share your happiness.
- Go out with your family and spend a day at the park or somewhere outside.
- You can also walk around the neighbourhood to enjoy the vibe and be part of your neighbourhood’s Eid celebrations.
We wish you all a Blessed Hari Raya Puasa! May it be a day of happiness and joy for you and all around you. Do keep in mind that Ramadan is still not over and you still have a chance to atone and pray for your sins. Make the most out of the little time you have left of the holy month. The last days of Ramadan are considered more holy, especially the 27th night of Ramadan when the Laylatul Qadr is most probable to be.
We wish you all a joyous Eid al Fitr! 🙂
