Close your eyes and think about the holidays after your school examination. What comes to your mind? I am pretty sure that your mind will be filled with all sorts of colourful and appealing images. You may think about things ranging from playing with your friends to hanging out at different places. But how many of us would have imagined a pile of school books? I would take a chance and say that none of us would have done so. ‘Holiday Homework’ – quite frankly it might be hard to digest for a lot of people, especially for our young students. But no matter how oxymoronic it sounds, holiday homework is a reality and our kids have to face it. So how do we help them deal with it and still have happy holidays?
Better Communication
Things tend to pan out in a better manner when you learn to communicate the purposes underlying them in a proper way. For starters let us sit our kids down and explain the rationale behind holiday homework. But what really is the rationale behind this? I personally believe that this activity can do a lot of benefits for our kids. It makes sure that they don’t lose touch with academics even during the holidays. Yes, it might sound like a burden and be a cause for remorse. But make your kid understand that it is better than having to start afresh every time after the school reopens for a new semester. Being aware of the reason behind the act will reduce the sense of burden that your kid feels.
Planning and execution
What is the best way to deal with holiday homework? Just get it done in an orderly manner. Chart out a plan for your kid. Set apart a little time every day for homework and see to it that your child follows it without fail. Here again, communication is vital. Tell your child why it is important that he spends a bit of his time everyday finishing the homework. Let him know that failing to do so will only lead to a piling up of work for him which will eventually end up being a big burden.
Reward your kid
The promise of rewards always makes people perform better. Kids are programmed in no different manner. Let’s throw in a few small gifts to maximize their output. It could be something like an extra scoop of ice cream for every three straight days of meeting the homework target without fail. It can also be a weekend outing after a week of successfully completed homework. Such things can also add a positive dimension to the otherwise negative thoughts about homework in the minds of your kids.
The holidays are a season for fun. Your kids certainly do deserve them. So, make sure that they do get fun-filled holidays. Ensure that the holiday homework does not wreck a perfect holiday season. As I stated earlier, this would mean handling it in a smart and disciplined manner. With a bit of care, you can make sure that your kids spend a wonderful holiday season while at the same time finishing their holiday homework.
