Alright, let’s turn our eyes away from our books and start off with a simple task.
Close your eyes and start imagining the things you would closely relate to “Australia”.
Did pictures of kangaroos, koalas and other visual treats appear in your mind? Well, yes, that is the Australia that we all know about. Or perhaps, it is the old Australia that we were all familiar with. Australia is home to a great number of unique plants and animals. It is famous for its pouched animals which are called marsupials – kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, quokkas and so on. But how much of all that is left now?
Many of us may have heard about the latest happenings in Australia during the past few months. At least for the past month, it was difficult to not come across some news related to Australia. The nation witnessed one of the most devastating wildfires that the world has ever seen and there are many other related things that you need to know, learn and immediately respond to.
The fury of the fires
When did the present set of devastating fires start? They began towards the end of July last year. Yes, for almost 6 months Australia has been literally burning. Can we put a number on the immense destruction that has been caused? Around 30 people have been killed. More than 10 million hectares (100,000 sq km) of bush (wooded land), forest and parks across Australia have been subjected to destruction.
How has Australia’s rich wildlife been affected? It is estimated that at least 1 billion animals have died owing to the fires. Some of the most circulated visuals from the fires were that of a koala bear drinking water from a tourist. All of us have seen this and other related visuals which are hugely alarming. With the destruction of such a scale, Australia will never be the same again. Similarly, the world will never be the same again.
The smoke from Australia’s bushfires has turned New Zealand’s glaciers brown, which means they will melt faster. It is important for us to understand that if any part of the earth.
Digging into the reasons
But aren’t bushfires common in Australia? Yes, they are. Every year during summer, Australia is affected by bushfires. But what happened this year? The intensity of the fires was of a level that has never been witnessed before. Was this a mere coincidence? Or is there something else to it?
The answer is something that we have all heard of. Yet some people do not believe it. Australia is witnessing one of the most devastating fires in this world’s history due to the effects of ‘climate change’. The nation is experiencing one of the worst droughts in decades. Temperatures have increased and this has led to the severe nature of the fires.
Climate change – it’s time to step up our game
Climate change is a reality. The happenings in Australia are the biggest evidence for this. Climate change has already crossed the manageable limits. What does this mean for us? It means that we have to act with more urgency. It is time that governments, organizations and individuals across the globe took adequate action to counter climate change. Continuing with the burning of fossil fuels and the cutting down of trees is like signing our own death note.
But can we do something at the individual level? Yes, we can and we should. All of us must try to spread awareness about climate change and promote practices that are good for the environment. This can be in the form of simple acts such as choosing to walk or cycle between destinations instead of traveling by a fossil-fuel-powered vehicle, turning off the lights and fans when we do not need them and so on. We can also learn to opt for more environment-friendly products.
It’s everyone’s problem
There is a lesson that all of us across the globe must realize. How many freak natural disasters has the world witnessed over the past few years? The Brazilian fires, Indian floods and the East African cyclones are among the long list of unnatural natural disasters that tormented different parts of the world in recent times. The bushfires in Australia are the latest addition to this. What does all this tell us? It tells us that such freak disasters are a global problem and they affect each and every inhabitant of the earth.
Australia is still burning. During the month of January, rains brought solace to different parts of the nation at different times. However, the fires have not been completely extinguished. Experts predict that things can get out of hand in a few weeks and the intensity of the fires can increase once again. The world cannot turn a blind eye. The bushfires in Australia are a call for everyone across the globe to unite, to acknowledge the dangers of the present and to take action to safeguard our home from destruction.
“Knowledge without practice is useless.” It is time for us to put our textbook knowledge to a practical test. Remember all those lessons you learned about the environment and eco-friendly ways to take care of our surroundings and how to lead a healthy life, it is time to put it all into action. Let us show nature the love and care we have for it and we are definitely going to be gifted back with nature’s love. After all, “you get what you give!”
