Important points to note
‘The only constant in life is change.’ What an apt saying for the world that we live in now. From wearing masks, to using the ‘tracetogether’ application or token, to safe distancing measures, to a social limit of five pax (at present moment), we are all living in a constant state of change these days.
Similarly, transitioning to a new school can be a scary or tough experience for some children and it is completely natural to feel that way. This is not talking about a new pen, or a new school bag. The change that is being discussed is a new school; a new and entirely different environment, new teachers, new classmates. The adjustment period can vary for everyone. So, how can you help make your children feel comfortable and prepare them for Secondary school?
Don’t panic
It is the first piece of advice we have for you. We understand that secondary school is an important phase for your children. But panicking and obsessing about it won’t do anyone any good. If your children see you anxious and panicking, they will feel the same way too. Instead, try to project a calm image to your children. Assess the situation and act accordingly. Be excited for them. You being excited will make them feel excited too.
Reassure your children
Talk to your children. They might be feeling worried and have many doubts. Assure them that they will do alright and that you will be there to help them in any matter. Answer any doubts they might be having. Talk to them about your experiences in Secondary school and offer them tips on how to perform well in academics.
Travelling to school
If your children have to travel to school on their own, show them how they can reach the school. Go along with them a few times and make sure they have understood the route and the modes of transport they have to use. Teach your children road safety and safe practices in public.
Purchase essentials
Get the things your children need early. Do not wait till the day before school starts. Buy your children cool-looking (but practical) bags and accessories. It can help them feel excited about going to school, and also boost their morale about being in a new and seemingly intimidating environment.
Choosing a school and CCAs
Make sure you pick a school suited to your child’s likes and talents. Picking a school they are not interested in can make them feel reluctant to go. Go to the school with the children for a day and look around. Also, sit down with your children and look at the various CCAs offered in your child’s school. Help your child select ones that they like and will help them grow. They are good ways to get your children excited to go to school and help them make new friends.
Look at subjects and portions
Before the new semester begins, help your children look through the various subjects and syllabus for the upcoming term. It will help them get familiarised with it. Help your children work on their basics. If they do so, they will find it easier to understand when different topics are taught at school.
Check for additional tuition or other help
See whether your children require additional help or tutoring. If so, enrol them early to make the best of their time. There are plenty of online tuition platforms that could complement your child’s learning experience.
Talk to them about any issues they might face
Talk to your children about bullying and other potential issues they might face in school. Also, teach them how to act in emergencies. Teach them first aid and self-help measures. Make sure they memorise your contact details and any other contact number they might require.
Talk to their teachers
Once settled in, try to find out who your child’s teachers are. Give them a heads up about your child’s needs. Also, try to find out about the school and faculty and update your child on it. Find out about school policies, especially leave and attendance policies.
Be open and supportive
Encourage them to make new friends and help them out if needed. Host study sessions, allow them to hang out with their new friends.
Access to resources
Secondary school means more work. Make sure they have access to the resources they need; a computer, a good internet connection, stationery items, and so on. Prepare a good study environment for them where they won’t be disturbed.
Health is vital
Keep track of your child’s health. Being healthy means fewer absences. Create a sleep schedule and make sure they have a balanced meal. Pack healthy meals for lunch, and pack extra to share with friends.
Check-in periodically
Check to see whether your children are doing well. Talk to them about their day at school. It will let them know that you are interested in their school life. It will also help them open up about any issues they might be facing. Your children are growing up. Let them be more independent. Let them start doing things and make decisions on their own. Watch over them and only interfere if necessary. It would be a good idea to start setting boundaries and respecting their privacy. It will help them feel more comfortable around you.
Help them with time management
Teach your children about managing their time. Help them create schedules and stick to them. It can help them cultivate healthy habits and help them be punctual in life.
We hope these tips prove to be helpful to you. We wish you and your children all the best for the upcoming academic calendar! 🙂
