While most of the primary school students have started their end-of-year school holidays, a certain group of students are starting to feel the jitters. Yes, primary six students, this Wednesday, 25 November 2020, the Primary School Leaving Examination results will finally be out! Are you mentally prepared to receive them? What’s the mood at home right now? Yes, we know that our kids would surely be pretty anxious about the impending results. But it’s not just the kids, is it? The PSLE results are something that would definitely give parents a few sleepless nights as well. So, what do we need to do right now?
We all need to calm down!
But then it is easier said than done, right?
Don’t worry, we are here with a few tips that can help you with that.
It will come when it comes
We are at that time of the year when the PSLE results are enjoying a great hype all around and this is because of the very fact that they are right around the corner. The Ministry of Education has announced that the results will be released at 11 am on 25 November 2020. The key point that we need to remind ourselves, as well as our kids, is that the results are going to be published exactly at that point. No matter how much sleep we lose over it or how much time we spend thinking about it, the results have already been tabulated. Nothing can change the scores, so what’s the point of all this anxiousness? Just chill and let the results come.
This too shall pass
Come the day of the results, many of us will be overjoyed while there is a chance that some of us will be disappointed. The anticipation of the results is surely the major factor driving our moods right now. But at the end of the day, the PSLE results are not the end of the world. Yes, the day of the results is definitely going to be a milestone for every kid who has taken the exam as well as his/her family members. But we should encourage our kids to learn from this experience and carry on with life. The results do not determine their future.
Whether it is success or disappointment, parents must realize that there is a long road ahead in the lives of their children. You need to tell this to your kids as well. Let them know that whatever happens on 25 November 2020, that too will pass.
Keep the grades out of it
The one important rule that you must never forget during these days is to ensure that you do not let the words ‘marks’ or ‘grades’ pop up during conversations at home. This is not the time to speculate about marks and grades. Bringing them into conversations is only going to heighten the levels of anxiety.
Watch something or Do something
This is the ideal time to do something that would help keep you and your kids in a positive frame of mind. Parents, here again, you need to take the lead. Spend some quality family time, order food from your favourite restaurant, and watch one of your favourite movies together. A light-hearted comedy or a feel-good movie would be the ideal choice. Shows that we had watched when we were younger – ‘Growing Up’ and ‘Friends’ are available on Netflix now. So, plan a movie night and spend some time together!
A drive around town or a visit to the local park (complying with all COVID-19 safety precautions of course) would also be a good suggestion. You could even try teaching your kids how to cook. Use your creativity and come up with something. Have some fun and let your kids enjoy the holidays. Trust us, you will have plenty of time to think about the results once they are released.
To our beloved primary six students, you need to relax. Get proper sleep. Have some nice food and do the things that you love. Let the results come when they come. Consider 25th as just another day in your life. Dear parents, whatever the outcome may be, your kids are going to face it with you by their sides. So, let’s not overthink much about the PSLE results. Let us now just focus on giving our kids the time and confidence that they need. Wishing all Primary Six students all the very best! 😊
