PSLE results are out! How to decide which school for my child?

Posted on November 27, 2020November 27, 2020 by 88tuition.com

The curtain of suspense has lifted and the PSLE results are finally out! So, what happens next?

Now, you have to decide on Secondary Schools. But who exactly should be making this decision? What are the things to keep in mind while deciding this? Let’s dive into these topics today.

Who is making the decision?

Now, as parents, you always have the best interests of your kids in mind. So yes, you might be tempted to analyse every factor on your own and come up with the best secondary school choice for your child.

But is that the right way to go about things? Not really.

Choosing the right secondary school is a really important decision and we are not suggesting that you leave it all to your kids to decide on this matter. What we say is that you need to let your kids be involved in the process and preferably let them take the lead.

Teaching responsibility and decision-making

Let your child take a look at the results and assess the situation. All factors should be taken into account – child’s interests, PSLE scores, CCAs at various schools and other relevant factors. Based on these observations, let your child come to a conclusion. So what can you, as a parent, do then? Listen to what your kid has chosen, and listen to the reasons for their choice. Now there are a few pro-tips here to keep in mind:

  • Start off with a compliment
  • Do not (even unintentionally) demean your kid’s opinion
  • Be gentle in your delivery – If you feel that he has made an error or missed out some important factors, then bring that up in a subtle and suggestive manner that would induce him to think in that manner as well without feeling bad

What’s the whole point of this approach? It serves as a vital lesson for your child in one of the most important life skills – decision-making. It also ensures that your kid becomes more responsible in academics as he now knows that his academic decisions are taken with his own active participation.

Things to keep in mind

So, now that we have settled the fact that the decision-making process is a team effort with both parents and students involved, let’s take a look at a few pointers that you need to keep in mind.

Identify your kid’s abilities

This is your rule number one. Nothing matters more than self-evaluation. Identify your kid’s abilities and use this as your main reference point while picking secondary schools. Check out schools that offer more scope for CCAs that are in sync with your child’s interests and abilities. You could even consider applying to specialised schools if your child displays exceptional prowess in domains such as arts or sports.

Do your homework

Before beginning your application process, go through the instructions given by the Ministry of Education in a thorough manner. Make sure you gain a mastery over this.

Do a comprehensive analysis of the different schools, especially the ones you have shortlisted. Go to the school websites, check out the CCAs that they offer, find out the programmes and subjects offered. Never fail to account for proximity and transportation as well.

Take into consideration the specific needs of your child as well. Keep an eye on the various forms of financial assistance and scholarships that can be availed.

Remember that if you wish to get into an affiliated school on a priority basis, then you need to list that school as your first choice.

This is definitely a period of transition in the lives of our kids. It’s a milestone and making carefully planned-out decisions at this moment can go a long way in helping our kids maximise their potential in life. At this juncture, parents have a critical role to play – the role of enablers. Let’s make sure that the decisions and discussions on picking secondary schools are taken with the active involvement of our children themselves along with a cognisance of their interests and a comprehensive analysis of the available options.

It’s time to let our children grow into bigger shoes. All the best! 🙂
