Celebrate good times, come on! Finally! The examinations are over – Now, it’s the time to wait for the results. How many of you like to wait? For some of us, the wait simply is just too long! This wait does not just apply to our kids who are taking the PSLEs, but also the students of the other levels who have just finished their end-of-year examinations.
How can we help our kids reduce their anxiety and nervousness as they wait for their exam results?
Our minds can play some really crazy tricks on us in such scenarios. How many of you end up spending hours every day thinking about the exams and the awaited results?
For many of us, the daily routine would include spending a significant amount of time rewinding and analyzing the exact sequence of events that took place on the day of the exams. Many would be able to recall every minute detail from those days, ranging from the food you had for breakfast to the number of pens you carried to the exam hall. For others, most of the ancillary stuff would be a blur. Whichever category you fall into, chances are high that you may be kicking yourself constantly for some answer that you might have got wrong due to a lack of focus.
Even if you aced every single paper, your mind might be sending worry signals to you. They would sound something like, “what if I got that answer wrong?”, “what if I wrote down something else?” or even “What if my exam sheet gets lost in transit?” These doubts can get really wild and imaginative. But yes, such thoughts can surely come to your mind while you await your results.
What should you do?
At the end of the day, what does all this theorizing, worrying and speculation do for you? Ask yourselves this question. The answer – absolutely nothing. Oh wait, it does do something. It simply brings on more anxiety for you.
Now does that explain what you should do?
The exams are done! You gave your heart and soul towards the preparations. Now it’s time to just sit back and chill. That’s one of the reasons why the holidays follow the exams. But yes we know, all that has been said, is easier said than done. However, there are a few ways to help you out here.
Do what you love
After weeks and months of study, you’ve finally got some free time! Think about it. Once the results are out you’ll have to slowly move back into the rhythm of your academic curriculum and rigour.
So what do you do? You do what you love. Are you a book lover? Then this is the time to immerse yourself in some of those books that you’ve always wanted to read. If you are into movies then check off some of the movies on your watchlist. If you wanted to learn some new skills then make use of all the available online tools and focus on that. Put yourself in such activities and you’ll be able to keep your minds away from most of the results-related worries.
Time to be realistic
But inevitably our minds will drift towards the results. They will definitely be released soon. One thing that we need to keep in mind is to remain realistic. Clear your mind and figure out what you are likely to get. Stay confident, guys. Whatever has happened has happened, and so don’t worry, you will get through and improve from this set of results. It’s not the end of the world, regardless of the outcome!
Give them a helping hand
Parents, this is where we can help our kids. Remind your kids to chill and advise them that after all, it’s just an examination. Make sure that they do not take up any stress that is in excess of what their little shoulders can handle.
As we wait for the exam results, let’s try to stay away from negative thoughts about those results. Stay positive, stay realistic, and stay happy! 🙂
