“Kids these days!”
Yes, many of our conversations end or begin with this common phrase – usually with a sigh of resignation. Kids these days are very different from the ones who grew up in the previous generations. Their qualities, opportunities, and the challenges that they face are all very different from what the previous generations had to deal with. That is precisely what makes parenting a bit tricky today.
Do you ever feel concerned that as a parent you are not doing enough for your kids? Do you worry that there is something wrong with your style of parenting?
Well, first of all, relax. Almost all parents who are concerned about the well-being of their kids tend to have such doubts. So yes, you are not a bad parent!
Let’s just take a look at a few things that can help you ace parenting in the 21st century.
Nothing can trump “presence”
If there is one golden rule to parenting that can stand the test of time, then that is this – ‘be present’. There is nothing more important than giving your kids your presence. Make time for them. Without that, you can never truly get to know your children.
Strike up conversations with your kids. Indulge in family activities together. Make sure that you catch up with each other at the dining table on a frequent basis. Watch some good movies together, read to your kids and make sure that they feel your presence.
Be approachable
Whom should your primary or secondary schooler go to when he/she encounters a problem? If you want your kids to come to you when they are faced with crises or significant issues in their lives, then they must feel that you are approachable. While spending time with your kids speak to them about your childhood – the fun you had, the things you did, and the issues that you faced.
This can help your child be more open to sharing with you about his problems and the things that are happening in his life. Driving or walking your kid to school is a great way to build intimacy with your child. During these frequent trips, strike up conversations that would help you bond.
One of the things that you need to keep in mind is that you should refrain from sounding judgemental. Don’t go too hard on your kid as well. Nurturing the relationship and getting your kid to confide in you can be a long process that demands regular habits and efforts on the part of a parent.
Cheer them on
Support your kids and put in some extra effort for them. If your child is interested in a sport, learning a musical instrument, or some other activity, then do not refrain from providing support. If it’s an area that you know little of, then while your child is involved in it, try to learn more about the domain. Take that extra effort to be involved. Your child will surely notice and will feel heartened and grow closer to you.
Where are the dads?
Gone are the days when taking care of the kids was seen to be the exclusive domain of mothers. The modern age actually demands that fathers play an appropriate and involved role in bringing up the kids as well. Various studies from across the globe point to the fact that more involvement in parenting from fathers ends up improving the results of children in academics as well as other domains.
Having a positive father figure while growing up is shown to benefit children in developing healthy frameworks for behaviour with individuals of the opposite sex. When both parents are involved in parenting, things become a whole lot easier. Your kids feel better and more confident as well.
Crafting healthy parenting frameworks ensures that parents and children can sustain their bonds and be support systems for each other throughout their lives. It ensures that the younger generations are able to derive the right values and gain good social and emotional skills. Parenting in the 21st century, despite its challenges and intricacies is a delightful experience that is definitely worth the effort! 😊
