Invasions are an interesting matter to discuss, aren’t they? Whether it be Alexander the Great, Napoleon or the European imperial powers, invaders have caused major disruptions throughout history. As the Christmas season approaches it would be worthwhile if we started discussing a new kind of invasion that is affecting us today although we seldom recognise it. Any idea what it is about?
It is an invasion that has occupied our homes, from our living rooms to bedrooms and from our lawns to our dining tables
It is the invasion of gadgets and related technology.
Yes, these devices offer us a number of revolutionising advantages but it is time we took cognisance of their ill effects and brought in changes.
Why should we act now?
Outside of your office hours, on an average, how many hours per day do you spend with gadgets? Taking out academic-related needs, how many hours do you kids spend on their gadgets every day? Now answer another question. How much time do you spend together with your family indulging in a simple conversation?
Technology has surely eaten into our family hours and needs to be combated urgently. Tech addiction can make individuals pull back from others and become solitary. It would prevent bonding within the family and would be extremely detrimental for your children.
The #NoTechChallenge
So, this Christmas season what do you think about rolling out a ‘No Tech Challenge’ for your family?
But what about those calls from office? What about my mails? What about Instagram and Facebook? Well, no pain no gain. It is going to be tough and yes, you are going to see a lot of grimaces in your household. But at the end of the day, this is something that would be enriching. It would help you bond with your partner and kids.
So what are the things that you should keep in mind?
First of all, get your partner on board and explain the challenge to your kids.
Secondly, be ready to face some whining.
Thirdly, don’t break the rules and see to it that your kids don’t feel like breaking them as well.
P.S you could put in a caveat about emergency parental usage of gadgets. But be fair here.
How to make it happen
Well, since you are pulling technology out of your life for a few days you would need something to keep your family occupied. This is where you can prove to your kids that gadgets are not all there is to the fun. Plan a short trip together to the local park or any other destination. Spend some time in conversation. In the morning take bicycle rides or runs together. Get out in the open and play a sport with your kid. At night or in the noon get everyone in the living room and play cards or something else that does not require the use of gadgets. Get your kids to help out in the kitchen. For a change let everyone put in a hand or two while cooking lunch. Before bedtime, you can read to your kids. You could also get your kids to indulge in some extra reading.
The options are endless. Who knows, by the end of it all everyone might even forget about their phones. Well, that is until you get that call from the office! Jokes aside, the #NoTechChallenge can offer an opportunity for you to spend some real quality time with your dear ones. It might require quite a bit of sacrifice, but at the end of the day be assured that you will never regret it.
Here’s wishing a blessed Christmas to one and all, may the festive season fill your homes with joy and love! 😊
