Finally, the March holidays are here! Any big plans to relax and enjoy the one-week break?
Life as a Singaporean parent can be pretty challenging today. Yes, you hardly get any time to keep your mind off all those commitments, deadlines, and assignments at work. Working from home may have made it slightly easier to balance, but let’s face it. Juggling our work commitments with the equally important family time is often a Herculean task. But is that any excuse for losing out on family time?
Nothing beats the time you spend together
There really is no substitute for the time that we spend together with our families. Being with your family, speaking with each other, having open conversations, and catching up with each other’s lives ensures family bonding and serves as a positive influence on the emotional well-being of all.
Parents get to know their kids better and understand the various challenges that the latter might be going through. Children get to feel more explicitly that they are loved and cared for, and they gain the confidence to discuss with their family any issue that is of significance in their lives.
So, can anything substitute this family time? No!
But, how do we ensure that we get some family time regularly? What can we specifically do during this holiday season to help foster better relationships with our closest and dearest?
A break from the gadgets
Gadgets are one of the biggest drains of our time today. This applies to people across age groups. We end up spending a great deal of our free time glued to our gadgets. During the March school holidays, let’s put at least a short freeze on gadget usage daily. Let that be a family rule. Surely that would free up some time for everyone. This time can be spent together and used for family bonding.
Getting together at the dinner table
Ever heard the saying, ‘the family that eats together, stays together’.
The dinner table is one of the best places for family conversation. Make sure that you have at least one meal together at home, every day. Bond over food and sharing. Parents, try to plan your work schedules accordingly. Of course, it goes without saying that the dinner table is a gadget-free zone.
After the meal, cleaning up and doing the dishes is something that can be taken up as a family activity as well. This sends many positive messages to children – the dignity of work, breaks gender stereotypes and so on. It also gives us more time to spend with each other.
What about a family outing?
There are a few safe travel destinations that you can choose during this period. Go out a bit with your kids. A fresh farm visit, a trip to Singapore’s Universal Studios, checking out the Art Science Museum – there are several local destinations that can give you some precious family time. A visit to a water theme park or some VR fun at HeadRock VR are other exciting suggestions worth considering.
Something that the kids love
Do your kids think that you are not someone who does fun stuff? Well, maybe you should dispel such notions during these holidays. But how do you do that?
Well, do something that your kids enjoy a lot. You could try watching movies or series from genres that your kids love. Make some popcorn, get some snacks, and have a family movie night.
But, there is something else that parents can do and this can be a lot more impactful than anything else. Just play with your kids. Join them in whatever they do. Be it a game of football, painting with them, or even if it’s some mundane form of play that you can never get the true meaning of. Partake and join your kids in their play. Such instances would be the memories that your kids look back at years down the line, the memories that would bring some tender happiness to their hearts, and a smile to their faces even when they are going through difficult situations. These are the memories that parents will also have to look back to. Other elements that we consider important now, such as the grades scored in tests or prizes won at some events are all going to be secondary. So make it a priority to craft some happy memories. Kids can grow up in the blink of an eye.
Spread some positivity
Kids can definitely use some quality time with their parents any time, any day. This is all the more true when they are going through significant phases. Take the case of the kids who are set to take the PSLE this year. What might be the concerns that would be running in their heads?
Fear of examinations, concerns about their performance, anxiety about the future, the pressure of expectations – the list goes on. Having parents who can spend time with them and give them the right words of motivation help kids tackle challenges in a healthy manner.
There should be no excuse when it comes to family time. You’ve just got to be able to put in the hours here guys. May these holidays help us make the right steps in that direction!
