It’s the March holidays!
“Balancing sports and academics is difficult but definitely doable”
Children are all looking forward to playing and going on vacations. Even though holidays are about fun, they shouldn’t exclusively be just about that. Time has to be allotted for studying too. Slacking off is not a good thing for your children’s future. It is time to start preparing for Term 2. So, what can you do to ensure that your children are on the way to excelling in the new term?
Time to reflect
Reflect and Rethink on the last terms. Ask your children to spend some time thinking and reflecting on their actions and performance in the last term. Ask them to identify areas of strength and weakness. Help them rethink their old strategies and create plans to counter any issues they faced previously.
Make a new schedule
Help them create a schedule for the holidays. Make sure they are allotted enough time to do the other things they enjoy as well. Make sure the time is divided well so they don’t miss out on the holiday fun or waste the precious time they have.
Prepare in advance
Ask your children to look up new subjects and topics that they will have to learn in the new term. Even if they might not be able to grasp it all, they will get an idea and familiarisation on what is to come and prepare accordingly.
Work on your basics
The reason why many students find different subjects hard is because they don’t have the basics covered. For example, you can’t expect to solve complex mathematical problems without knowing how the number system and basic arithmetic works. It is the case for all the subjects. So, make use of this holiday time when your children are not busy with their classes to brush up on the basics and create a solid foundation for your children to improve their academic performance. It might seem like a waste of time, but the time spent doing this will help you save more time in the future.
Discipline
Discipline and self-control are more important to a student than anything else. Help your children practise a disciplined lifestyle where they do not slack off and use each minute they have productively. Make sure they have a proper schedule and routine to follow. It will help them get their lives more under control and grow up to be disciplined individuals.
Rethink the way you learn
If it seems like your children are spending a lot of time working on their studies and not showing any improvement or progress, rethink the way they learn and the methods they apply. When it comes to studies many students try to memorise the data they are presented with – from the textbooks or by teachers teaching them. That is not learning in the true sense. You need to understand what you are learning and not just memorise sentences and paragraphs that you are going to write down for exams. Help your children to improve their learning practices.
- Think about what you are learning
Instead of memorising information in front of you, try to understand what you’re learning. Actively think about what you’re reading or writing. Think about the topics, the steps you used to reach the answers and the logic behind them. Ask yourself whether there are alternate methods to realise the solution. Make changes to the questions and see how the steps change. Make changes to the steps, and see how the answer differs. All these will help you understand the concepts better and also make studying more fun. Once you learn the underlying concepts, you can answer any question that comes related to them.
- Think about why you are learning it
Another thing you can do is think about why you’re learning a particular topic- what its uses are and where it is applied. Learning about the real-life applications of different concepts can help you understand better. You are most likely not to forget these. Try to make connections between the different topics you study. When learning different topics, try to see the connections between them. How they are interlinked, how one concept leads to the development of another, and so on.
Watch out for their health
Make sure your children are healthy and fit when entering a new term. Only a healthy body can have a healthy mind. So. watch out for their health during the holidays. Make sure they stick to a proper sleep cycle. Ensure that they have a balanced meal at all times. Encourage them to go out and play. It is vital that they have social interaction and also spend time outdoors to grow up to be emotionally and mentally healthy adults.
Buy school supplies in advance
Do check on what your children need for the new terms and buy them the things required. Make sure to go shopping early and don’t wait until the last minute so that you won’t miss out on anything.
We wish you all the best for the upcoming term and for now, happy holidays! 🙂
