Experience is the best teacher, people say. Probing a bit further, it becomes clear that every experience that life throws before us leaves a part of it within us. That’s good, right? A reminder of the paths that we have traversed. But what if it could be detrimental as well, at least in some scenarios?
In the past year, most if not all of us were hit by a totally unforeseen event that would transform the entire globe to a point beyond recognition, all in the span of a single year. As we continue our fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to remember that certain scars that the past year has created will take an extended period to heal. Some of these might not have even revealed themselves and maybe lying in wait beneath the familiar faces of our dear ones all around us.
Wait, what exactly are we speaking about here?
How often have you heard about ‘Post-pandemic stress’?
The COVID-19 pandemic has put the global health infrastructure to the test by a surge in physical health-related challenges. With vaccination drives being carried out across the globe, it’s time to discuss more intensely the mental health challenges emanating from this troubling period.
How did our lives change in the past year?
Well, it’s better to ask if there is anything that has not changed at all. Cutting across age groups, nationalities, and institutions, the way of life has been transformed in quite a haste. The way we work, the way we learn, the way we interact with our loved ones and the way we spend our free time have all been subjected to change.
For most of us, the ability to travel or move about was significantly restricted. The avenues of interaction might have reduced considerably in many of our lives. Many may have felt isolated or cut-off, spiking anxiety levels.
Have we been able to cope up with all this? Well, we haven’t had the time to adjust and to many, the last year has been largely traumatic. This is expected to create a wide prevalence of post-pandemic stress disorders in the near future. Many of such instances are already being manifested.
Our children are also susceptible to such issues. But, what can be done in this regard?
Spotting the signs early on
What’s the first step? It is none other than identifying the signs and spotting post-pandemic stress early on. In the case of children, parents and educators need to take an active role here.
We need to keep our eyes and ears open. Pick up the cues right when they are subtle or at early stages. What are the signs that we should be looking out for here?
Signs can range across a wide scale. They may include:
- Change in appetite or approach to life in a pessimistic way
- Enhanced tendency to get angry or breaking down
- Change in sleep cycles and reduced sleep time
- Difficulty in concentrating and heightened levels of anxiety
- Physical signs such as frequent headaches, stomach issues, and rashes
What can be done?
Vigilant identification should be followed by an active attempt to do the needful. Post-covid stress, if spotted, should be combated with the help of proper professional help.
But, there is another aspect that needs to be focussed on – the strategy of prevention. This calls for a proactive approach to the issue. Many of us are susceptible to post-covid stress. This includes everyone ranging from frontline workers to even those of us who have been affected in relatively marginal ways.
There are a few things that we can do to keep ourselves in shape and prevent the onset of post-covid stress. A lot of this will revolve around the role of support systems. We need to be there for our dear ones. Parents, teachers, and families need to come forward and act as reservoirs of bountiful support to our young ones. Be there for them, listen, and respond emphatically. Allay fears and curb anxiety. Having people in one’s life and hearing some words of reassurance is the best way to beat the threat of post-covid threat.
Spend time in activities such as exercise, yoga, meditation, etc. Keep an eye on what is on your plate. Eat healthily, drink plenty of water and make sure that you get an adequate amount of sleep. If you are a travel freak and are finding it tough to control your urge to travel, you can count on the numerous VR apps that will help you explore the virtual means of travel. It is all about finding simple alternatives and making sure that our hearts and mind are in the right place.
Make use of social media and communication facilities to keep in touch with your dear ones who are far away. Have a weekly video call and stay updated about each other.
The COVID-19 pandemic is bound to leave a lingering impact on global society. By being there for each other in a caring and proactive manner, we can make sure that the fallout is managed healthily. We are restricted in our activity today. But let’s never forget that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and we are moving towards that light! 🙂
