Yes, the first two terms of the academic year 2021 have flown by and finally, holidays are here! Well into week 2 of the school holidays, it is only ideal for students to make plans (at the start of the holidays) to be productive and work hard to better themselves during the time.
But, what usually ends up on the last day of the holidays is that they realise they didn’t do anything they intended to do. They realise they have made an “expectation vs reality” meme out of themselves. 🙂
Let’s not make this the case this time around!
Assess yourself
- Before you start studying or working on your projects, take some time to assess yourself.
- Reflect on your performance in the previous semester and think about what you did right and what went wrong.
- Identify your strong points and weaknesses. Only then can you utilize the time you have in a better manner.
Once you finish this, you can adapt your learning styles accordingly.
Make a plan
If you are going forward without a plan, you are most likely to fail. Take some time and make a comprehensive plan on what to work on and when to. Allot more time to subjects you are weak in so that you build a better understanding of the basics.
Take breaks
Don’t try to study everything at once. Take breaks in between. It is better to learn for one hour and take a break for 15 minutes. It helps you focus better and understand concepts in an effective way.
Organise your materials
Collect and organise your study materials. Prep work is as important as the studying process. If you have not actually started filing your school materials, now might be a good time to start putting things in order. Effectively arranging your notes and other study materials will give you easy access to what you’re looking for and lessen the time wasted during the study session.
Study environment
Try to set a study environment where you can spend time undisturbed. It is the quality of the time spent to learn that is more important than the quantity. Whatever time you set aside to learn, make sure that nothing gets in the way during that time. A good study environment is vital for that. It can be your room or any place where you have privacy. Request family members not to come inside or disturb you during that time.
Learn to learn better
It is an important thing to consider. Students spend lots of time reading, working out problems, and memorising things. But most of it is committing facts and information to memory. They are not learning in the real sense of the word.
Ask yourself whether you’re learning or committing things to memory. Both are different. Just think about why you forget most of what you studied after the exams are over.
Students spend all their time working hard and find that it doesn’t reward them equivalent to their efforts. The main reason behind this is the lack of use of effective learning techniques. What can you do?
Work on the basics
Most of the time, why you don’t understand a topic might be because you might not understand the basics of the subject. You might think that it is a waste of time to go back and look at the basics. But, you won’t be able to grasp complex and advanced concepts unless you do this. The time spent doing this will help you save more time while learning other concepts.
Think about what you are learning
Instead of memorising information, try to understand what you’re learning. Actively think about what you’re reading or writing. Think about the topics, the steps you used to reach the answers, the logic behind them. Ask yourself whether there are alternate methods to get to the solution. Make changes to the way you approach a question and see how the steps change. Everything is a part of the learning process. It just helps you get better!
All these will help you better understand the concepts and also make studying more fun. Once you learn the underlying concepts, you can answer any question that comes related to them.
Think about why you are learning it
Another thing you can do is think about why you’re learning a particular topic- what its uses are and where it is applied. Learning about the real-life applications of different concepts can help you understand concepts better. You are most likely not to forget these.
Try to make connections between the different topics you study
When learning different topics, try to see the connections between them. How they are interlinked, how one concept leads to the development of another, and so on. Committing things to memory only makes use of your memory power. But, actively thinking about the connections and the topics requires analytical and imaginative processes. These help you remember them better and also help you improve your brain activity.
Also, don’t miss out on the different online learning platforms that have made learning easier and a lot more fun.
We hope these tips help you. Try to make use of the time you have at hand- your future depends on it. Also, try to engage in other activities too. Try not to make it all about studying. It won’t do you any good. Spend time with your family, learn a new skill, read books or anything that can help you relax. Try to balance these with your studies.
Let’s make the most out of this holiday season! 🙂
