‘You never truly realise the value of something until it is gone.’ Now, how many of us agree with this? It’s oddly true, isn’t it? It is often the case that we realize the value of something only after we lose it. Sometimes, some of us never even get the chance for this realization. Certain harrowing incidents make this more evident.
Tanjong Pagar Crash – Eyewitness account –
The devastating Tanjong Pagar car crash that occurred during the early hours of February 13 and claimed the lives of five young men was one such incident. As we still reel in the after-effects of that tragic loss, it has led many across the nation to put their lives into perspective. The shock from the incident has certainly led many to greater awareness about how precious life actually is. Who can really put a price tag on life?
Nothing can trump safety
The Tanjong Pagar crash, which saw the highest number of people killed in a single accident has once again kickstarted the debate on safety. Actions such as over-speeding and performing stunts using vehicles are quite common, especially among the youth. What we often that to forget is that such actions come with high risks including the loss of life.
Targeted and repeated sensitization drives for youngsters are something that needs to be explored with more interest. The family and parents have to take the lead and adopt a more proactive approach when it comes to the upbringing of children. The dangers of daredevilry must be nipped at the bud with active parental training right from a young age.
Take time to appreciate things
We might not have realized it, but whatever we have in life is actually quite precious. The daily routines, the quirky hobbies and most importantly, the people around us all end up making our lives more enriching and enjoyable. Maybe it’s time we began appreciating all this a bit more. Don’t pass up on opportunities to spend time with your dear ones and don’t be afraid to show love and care to them. Parents, whatever be the busy schedules at work, make sure that you never fail to put in that fair share of family time. Keep yourselves actively involved in the lives of your kids, and remember that time spend together is key to improve relationships.
Kids, especially teenagers, realize the importance of moments and that you will never get back lost time. We need to ensure positive habits in our homes such as ensuring that the family has at least one meal together every day, and that everyone makes a conscious effort to help each other out, be it with a listening ear, or aiding with a household chore.
Work on yourself
We are always a ‘work-in’progress’. Often you hear the dictum that ‘one never stops learning’. So, as we move ahead with our lives we have to make sure that we never pass up any opportunity for learning. Make sure that you work on improving yourself on a constant basis. Work on your relationships with your loved ones. Work on the stuff that prevents you from fulfilling what you want to do in life. Don’t feel reluctant about reaching out and getting help from your friends and family or even professional help if you feel that you are going through mental stress that you are unable to handle. None of us is perfect. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Never hesitate to keep improving, to keep working on the areas that can be further developed.
Give back as well
Just take a look around you. Open your eyes and ears; you will realize that you are a lot more fortunate than many of your counterparts. There are many across the globe who go through great struggles just to fulfil their basic necessities. There are even people around us who face tough predicaments. What does that mean for us? It means that it is always great to lend a hand of help or support.
Kids need to be taught the values of empathy and compassion. We should try to chip in our bit towards improving the lives of others to whom life has not been that fortunate. The smallest of steps that we take in this regard might become a life-changing action for someone. It is said that there is no greater joy than the joy of giving. So, support a charity, volunteer to do some social work, and become a hero for someone.
Life is something that is worth cherishing and celebrating. Every single day is an opportunity that is filled with excitement! Your loved ones add to the beauty. Don’t waste precious time, remember that life is too short and valuable. Make the life in your years count, not the years in your life! 🙂
