The US – Canada border dividing Ontario and New York is never short of activity. Every year millions of people rally to this magnificent stretch of land sandwiched between the two North American giants to be mesmerised by the mystical beauty of nature. Up and close they watch as the water descends down the steepest of slopes from about 170 feet up high. As the river plunges down in millions of litres with a ferocious yet enticing intensity and sets off an almost eternal mist at its footsteps, one is sure to be spellbound. Time just stops as you let the beauty of the Niagara Falls sink in. But did you know that the Niagara is not actually a single waterfall? Not one but three beautiful waterfalls greet the visitor here. And you are never going to run out of things to do at the falls.
So, does all that spark up the explorer in you? Well then just wait till you hear about all that you can do here.
The Great Lakes and the three Falls
The Niagara Falls are a part of the largest freshwater system in the world – The Great Lakes. Lake Eerie is connected to Lake Ontario via the Niagara River. It is as part of this connection that the Niagara Falls, one of the most marvelous spectacles of nature springs into existence.
On the American side you have first the large American falls and then the small but elegant Bridal Veil Falls. Towards the border lies the most massive of the three waterfalls – the Horseshoe Falls. So how close a view can you get of these wonders of nature? Well, the answer is, ‘as close as you want’.
Savouring the experience
What satisfies the explorer in you? Will an airborne view do? What about a boat ride at the base? Or do you want to feel the strength of the raging rapids at the floor? Maybe you need to get as close to that surge of water as you can? What if you could get behind and watch the intensity with which the water makes its landing?
Well, you can do all this and a lot more. The ‘Maid of the Mist’, the iconic boat tour at the immediate foot of the falls has been around since 1846. You definitely can’t claim the entire Niagara experience without a ride on the Maids, feeling the spray of the waters. The whirlpool rapids just a bit downstream and can be accessed with a jet raft. Wooden bridges with viewpoints at varying heights get you as close as you can to the falls. The ‘Journey Behind the Falls’, offers a view from below and behind the falls, something that is going to simply blow you off your feet. If during the day it is the almost ever-present rainbow that adds colour to the majesty of the falls, at night you will be dazzled as the falls bask in the colourful lights shot on them.
It’s not just the waters
Niagara is not just about the waters. Both sides of the border are filled with all that can rouse the spirits of the traveller, and it has something for everyone. The Niagara Sky Wheel and the various arcades are just perfect for the kids. The Niagara Botanical Park, the Skylon Tower, the Aquarium of Niagara and a host of other recreative options are at your beck and call.
Give yourself the experience to cherish lifelong by making a visit to the Niagara Falls!
