There’s nothing that can rival the work of our modern-day engineers, is there? Next vacation, plan a trip to the South American nation of Peru and be ready to get awed. About 50 miles from the Peruvian city of Cusco lies one of the seven wonders of the world. The Incan stone city of Machu Picchu, Peru’s greatest cultural treasure can put even the most advanced building techniques of the present era to shame. There’s a lot of interesting history to this man-made marvel and there’s a higher probability that this spot would be added to your travel bucket list at the end of this read.
Incan Abode in the Clouds
Machu Picchu stands at an altitude of 2430m (7970 feet) and at times is covered in clouds. The city is nestled between the peaks of Machu Picchu (which gives the citadel its name) and Huayna Picchu. It was built by rulers belonging to the Incan civilisation in the mid-15th century. But about 110 years after its completion, the city was abandoned. For more than 300 years this jewel remained unknown to the outside world until an American academic team rediscovered the ruins with the help of a villager. The site has since been in the spotlight for tourists and academicians. Restoration works were done and today it sits with multiple laurels – including a place on the lists of the seven world wonders and UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
Earthquake-proof
Machu Picchu is located in an earthquake-prone zone. Yet it is resilient to earthquakes. How did they achieve this? What sort of magical material binds these stones together? The answer – none. No mortar was used in the construction. The city was built by cutting rocks into the desired shapes and interlocking them. The rocks were cut so perfectly that during earthquakes they just bounce up as the earth shakes and fall back into place after that. And the Incans did all of this without any steel or iron tools.
Getting there – the Incan Trails
There are a number of options to choose from for getting to the stone city. The easiest would be to board a train from Cusco. But if you are the kind of person who loves adventure, there are a number of Incan trails which take you to the city. These trails are roads that were built by the Incans. They are another example of the advancement of their civilization. The trails cut through the mountains of the Andes and offer a wonderful trekking experience.
The peaks
Climb up the peaks of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu to get a splendid view of the city. A bit of fog can give the appearance of clouds caressing the historical ruins. This is one of the scenes that you can never get anywhere else and is worth a lifetime.
A Mystery It Still Remains
Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic sites on the planet today. But an important question about this ingenious piece of architecture remains unanswered. Why did the Incas build this engineering marvel? Ever since the site had been rediscovered, historians have been trying to answer this question but with no success. For all we know, it could have been anything. Machu Picchu is speculated to have been a military stronghold, a venue for certain ceremonies or a retreat for the higher classes. But we still never know for sure.
Filled with mystery and heritage, a visit to Machu Picchu is truly something that is worth its weight in gold. A visit to this wonder is surely something that needs to be on your bucket list if it already isn’t.
