Finally! The long anticipated (and much dreaded) PSLEs are finally over! Primary Sixes, take a deep breath, it’s time to relax, for awhile at least! Any idea what you plan to do during your break?
Well done! Some of you are planning to finally get back to the many storybooks that you’ve been wanting to read. The rest of you – well, if you’re going to use your gadgets, do take good care of your eyes! Go out for a bit and exercise as well, some nature and sunlight will do wonders for your mood.
For the avid readers, good on you for wanting to keep yourselves continuously engaged in acquiring knowledge. Reading, besides allowing us to explore (using words), also helps us to build a strong vocabulary.
What’s the importance of having a good vocabulary?
“Vocabulary enables us to interpret and to express. If you have a limited vocabulary, you will also have a limited vision and a limited future.” – Jim Rohn
Having a way with words surely brings in several perks. From better prospects for promotions at the workplace to better presentation skills while submitting assignments and cutting edge communication skills, a good vocabulary can impact your life significantly in multiple ways. So, does that give you enough reason to see to it that you have a good vocabulary?
Taking out the boredom
But how do you attain impeccable vocabulary skills? Most attempts at teaching kids words tend to end up as boring for them. It might not always be easy to convince a kid about the need to put in that extra bit of effort to acquire a superb vocabulary. We’ve just got to add some fun into the mix. We need to get our kids to learn new words while keeping them entertained and less aware of any burden of putting in extra hard work. Is this possible? Well, there are a few ways to do so. Let’s take a look at some of them, which can ensure that our kids acquire stellar vocabularies.
What about a game of Pictionary?
Who doesn’t like to have fun? Playing pictionary is a great way to help our kids to improve their vocabulary. Make sure to bring along a good degree of competitive spirit. Having kids guess the words based on pictorial nudges can help them to think more inquisitively. You can also use the game sessions to acquaint your kids with words that are unfamiliar to them (and they’ll surely be enthused to pick up the new words to put on a better performance next time).
Treats for words
How do you think kids will respond to rewards? Obviously learning new words pays off in the long run, but putting in immediate visible rewards to incentivise the word learning process can be an excellent idea. Rewards can be anything from a few bars of chocolates to extra playtime. But make sure that they are something that your kids value. You can conduct weekly vocabulary tests and promise rewards according to the performance of the kids. However, do make sure that the young ones feel proud of how much they have accomplished by having a larger vocabulary bank! All the chocolate will not give them a good language grade!
Challenges to keep the spirit up
Throw in a few challenges to push your little ones to the next level. What sort of challenges are we speaking about?
Choose a few good poems. Parents can even try their hand at penning a few poems for their kids. Make sure to throw in a few more challenging adjectives and verbs. Once you’ve got your poems ready, give them to your kids and ask them to decipher the meanings. In their pursuit to do so, they would need to understand the meanings of words that they are not acquainted with and would consequently learn those words.
Get them to read what they like
Does your child fancy a particular genre of literature? Well, then get your child more books from that genre. Since it’s something he loves, he will not get bored while reading the books. For example, when it comes to kids who love fantasy, get them to read books such as those from the Harry Potter series. As mentioned right at the start of this article, reading of all kinds is a major vocabulary booster. The more one reads, the better his vocabulary ends up being.
Go retro with some board games
Are board games really out of fashion? No! they can still shower a load of fun. So pull out those word games (or place your order for a few). You can spend some quality family time bonding over word games such as scrabble and also ensure that your kids get a great vocabulary.
Whatever fun method you choose, remember that when our kids learn a new word, they also need to learn more – like the different contexts in which the word can be used, the synonyms, etc.
So, which method are you going to try out? Well, we’d suggest that you try a mix of the different methods that we have mentioned above. Let’s add some fun to vocabulary building! 😊
