“To err is human, to forgive divine.” These are the words of Alexander Pope, one of the most celebrated English poets. What do you think of these words? With a bit of thought, we would be able to agree with what Pope says. Imperfection, as well as the susceptibility to go wrong, are inherent in our human nature. We must let our kids know it when they commit a wrong. However, chastising is not the best way of dealing with mistakes. Rather we should make sure that our kids learn from their mistakes and never repeat the same ones again.
The act of owning up
“But Mommy I didn’t do it. It was X who started it.” These kinds of refrains are common when you confront kids about their mistakes. Shifting the blame has been a common practice throughout the history of mankind and it is one of the most unhealthy practices as well. But why do your kids do this? There are many possible reasons ranging from a fear of punishment to a feeling of self-righteousness.
Whatever might be the reason, it is your job as a parent to figure it out. Get to the root of it and help your kid overcome the inhibitions to own up to his mistakes. This can start by letting your kid understand that mistakes are natural and that whatever the case may be, trying to disown one’s own actions is just an act of cowardice.
How to make your kids admit?
Admitting to mistakes can be hard but there are a few ways which can ease the burden here. The fear of punishment is one of the main reasons for evading blame. This can be addressed by parents adopting a more sympathetic and appreciative attitude when children admit that they did something wrong. The quantum of punishment can be reduced as opposed to when they seek to deny any wrongdoing.
But there is another more important step that needs to be put in place. Do you have regular conversations with your kids? Do they feel that they can trust you with anything? Do they know that they can always rely on you for any form of support? If ‘no’ is the answer to all or any of these questions, then you have a problem that needs to be addressed quickly. If your kid knows that you will always be there to support him, then he would be more forthcoming in admitting to his mistakes.
Looking through the eyes of the victim
Unruly behaviour from the part of your child might have hurt another person. What can be done here? You need to urge your child to think about the situation from the perspective of the person who was affected by his actions. Make your child think for himself and arrive at the harmful effects of her actions in a logic manner. In this way, he would be more convinced about the mistake that he made and there would be a strong resolve to not repeat the same. Asking him to do so would also make him good enough to be objective and honest while viewing happenings.
Kids make mistakes. But it is our duty as parents to make sure that each one of their mistakes turns out to be a learning block rather than pits that push them into doing more mistakes. In order to ensure that our kids become responsible human beings let us strive to shower criticism, support and correction whenever it is needed. But we need to make sure that all of this is done in the right proportion.
