Elsa’s magnificent ice palace was definitely a visual treat. But what if I tell you that there really exists something astonishingly similar to that in our real world? A habitable abode of ice can be created even without animation and graphics. Want to see for yourself? Alright then pack your bags. But where to?
Jukkasjärvi – 200 km north of the Arctic circle
Nestled near the North Pole, Sweden has always been a traveller’s paradise. While the nation has quite many attractions, the village of Jukkasjärvi surely houses one of the most unique of these. As the winds of winter blow across the village, a slew of artists and architects from across the world descend upon this village to share their skills for a grand spectacle. By December their masterpiece is ready. A grand hotel and art exhibition with the signature of finesse. And yes, it is not made of brick and mortar. The sprawling structure is crafted entirely of snow and ice.
River Torne – decorating the ice hotel
But where does all this ice come from? The village of Jukkasjärvi is located on the banks of the pristine River Torne. Nearing winter, the river slows down and begins to solidify. At the height of winter, this pristine water body is transformed into an abode of pure ice. It is this river that drapes the walls of the ice hotel through the winter. Thus, in essence, the visitors at the hotel are actually draped by the magnificent river.
The ice doesn’t stop with the walls
But what about all the things that lay inside this ice palace? The chairs, beds, tables and all the other pieces of furniture are made out of snow and ice harvested from the Torne, just like the hotel itself. The glasses that you sip from and the cutlery that you use to munch on your food would also be made in the finest quality ice.
Some icy numbers
Guess how much snow and ice it takes to build the ice hotel at Jukkasjärvi? It takes the same amount of snice that would be needed to make about 700 million snowballs. The hotel has around 300 beds, 55 rooms, an ice church, an ice sculpting studio and several restaurants among other specialties. Since it was first brought into being in 1990, as many as 546 artists have been involved in the design and development of the ice hotel over the years. Want a glimpse into the amount of care that goes into the detail? The chandelier that decorates the main hall of the hotel is made out of 1000 perfectly hand cut crystals.
But wouldn’t you just freeze to the core inside? Not really. Did you know that ice and snow are actually good insulators of heat? It may sound strange, but it is true. This is why at places where the surface of lakes freeze because of the cold temperatures, the region below these frozen surfaces still stay unfrozen. Likewise, while the outside temperatures may drop to as low as -40°C (-40°F), the temperatures inside the hotel hover around -5°C (21°F).

Next December don’t have any confusion regarding your holiday plans. Jump aboard the first plane to Sweden. A stint at an ice hotel is something that is worth experiencing at least once in your life. Take a break from the heat to live and dine in some ice.
