How many of us have fond memories connected to Parent Teacher Meetings (PTM)? Most of us dread these periodic events. Over the course of the years, our stake in these meetings might have changed from that of students to parents, but more often than not the harrowing experiences remain intact. However, what a lot of us parents fail to recognise is that these meetings hold a great deal of value for fine-tuning our children. Effective participation in Parent-Teacher meetings can provide us with inputs that will help our kids get better and bring in effective results in our family life as well. So here are a few things to keep in mind before attending your next meeting.
Be good listeners
Your child spends a great deal of his time in the classroom. His teachers are thus in a good position to analyse his behaviour and performance. Therefore, as a parent, you can get a great deal of information about your child during these interactions with his teachers. Hear them out. Find out the areas in which your child might be lagging. If your kid is showing some weakness in a specific subject, then don’t fail to meet the teacher who is handling that subject and discuss your child’s performance. It is important to go to these meetings with an open mindset. Do not be too defensive about your kid or turn a deaf ear to the criticism that may be voiced by the teachers. Remember that your parental love may at times make you blind to the shortcomings of your kid. Going beyond the recent examinations or the academic outcomes don’t forget to discuss your child’s behaviour and social skills as well. These interactions may also help you find out the hidden talents that you never knew your child possessed.
Share your observations from home
The meeting is a two-way process. Don’t forget about that. While you gain inputs about your child’s behaviour and performance at school don’t forget to share your relevant observations about her behaviour at home as well. This would help the teachers to understand your kid better and therefore adopt a conducive approach towards him/her.
Don’t take it out on your kids
You might have had a bad experience at the PTM. The teachers might have given you a lot of criticism about your child’s performance and behaviour. So how do you process all that? Well, one thing that every parent needs to understand is that lashing out your kid is not going to do the trick. Barbarian attitudes or rude approaches are not the way to go about. Sit your kid down. Share everything with her and ask her to speak her mind about the issues that her teachers raised. Through a fruitful conversation help your kid realise the areas where she may be erring. Explain to your kid the need to set things straight and improve based on the criticism. Let her know that you are always there for her as a support and that you are proud and happy to be her parent. This will surely help your kid improve and perform better.
It takes a village to raise a child. Let’s work together, parents and teachers alike, to reach the highest potential our kids are capable of!
