*The Bible says, “If you are too lazy to plough, don’t expect a harvest.”
The average human being gets a fair share of admonishment during his/her lifetime for being lazy. Laziness has probably been frowned upon ever since we humans set foot on this planet. The mere mention of the word ‘lazy’ conjures up negative reactions. So when we tell you that you need to be spending some time ‘being lazy’ you might instantly call us outrageous. But wait, hear us out for a minute (or two). Remember, if you go by the Judeo-Christian belief of Creation, God took 6 days to create the world. What did he do on the 7th day? He rested! Yes, so while we live in a secular world, there are certain lessons from religion that we should subscribe to, just for sheer sanity of mind.
The need to take a break
Our lives are filled with activity. Well, the past few months might not fit that description, but then, in general, the life of a person in the 21st century is filled with activity. Deadlines, assignments, homework, tuitions, cooking food, getting the laundry done, going out with friends… the list goes on and on. Don’t you think you need a break?
What happens to a machine that is constantly put to work? It gets worn out. Economists use the word ‘depreciation’ to denote the money or resources that have to be spent periodically for repairing machines that get worn out with use. We are not machines. But if even the most humongous machines made out of the most sturdy materials and advanced technology can get worn out, then we can surely be worn out as well.
Yes, we do need breaks!
How frequently?
We need to give ourselves our share of lazy time to ensure that we are able to function at our optimal levels consistently. But how frequently can you be lazy? Under normal circumstances, it’s perfectly advisable to take a day every week to be lazy.
Make sure that you clear your schedule and remain totally unoccupied at the time. Let your guard down for a while and enjoy the benefits that come along with it!
Plugging your body in for charging
It’s only human to go against what seems to be the norm. While we are chugging most days (and often, hours) of our lives, we need a quick reset to ensure that our engines are well-maintained and can last for longer periods of time. On your lazy day or lazy time, lay back on your bed. Let those bones and muscles rest. Give your body some time off. Overworking your body can lead to many issues ranging from simple aches and pains to more advanced cerebrovascular and cardiovascular ailments. Thus, by being occasionally lazy you are actually saving your body from some major health issues.
Giving peace to your mind
Often, more than our bodies we end up overworking our minds. There are always things running inside our heads, ranging from the mundane incidents of our day-to-day lives to more significant issues. The high rates of stress, depression and other mental ailments across the globe prove the fact that we end up putting real heavy loads on our minds.
Thus, spending some time being lazy can help you reduce your stress levels and make you a more happy person.
Some ‘Me Time’
Giving yourself the opportunity to be lazy can help you get some time to be with yourself. It can help you reflect on yourself better and enhance your perspectives. We all need these periodic bouts of time.
Don’t overdo it
By this point, you’re almost through a pretty convincing article on the need to be lazy. But don’t for a second let yourself overdo it. Remember, the message is clear- give yourself some well-deserved lazy-time (breaks) so that you can be more productive in your remaining time.
So, with the July holidays approaching next week, find a day every now and then to stay in bed, munch on your favourite food and do nothing. Everyone needs a break! Make sure that you get your fair share. Ultimately, they will help you enhance your productivity and be better at whatever you do! (Do we really have to say) Have fun! 😉
