Remember those old bedtime stories we were told? At least some of us might. The local tales and foreign ones. The kings and queens and common folk. The simple morals that ended the attractive narratives. All that would be somewhere in the most beautiful corners of our minds. Just take a trip back and search for those memories. If you did just now, then I am sure that you’d be having a smile on your face or a tear in your eye or both.
But snap out of it. That’s not what we are going to talk about here. Let’s talk about how many bedtime stories you have told your kids? Alright, we’ll be a bit more lenient. How many of our kids are even familiar with such a concept?
An equally fun alternative
Ok. The modern-day parent might not have the time or the skills for bedtime stories like our parents did. Bedtime stories were a part of growing up for countless generations of the past. They are a dying art today. But we have something that can address this void. For this, we have to thank Disney and the other movie houses that churn out movies – animated ones as well as others – specifically for kids. These visual treats include the ones that we once heard as youngsters when our mothers and fathers tucked us into bed.
Teaching morals through tales
The tales that we heard as kids and the movies that our kids watch today are actually an ingenious way to teach young children morals. An adult can be moved to action by the words of Gandhi or Mandela. But how would a kid react if you narrated a bit of Gandhian thought to him? It would be a total failure. A better option would be to let them use their screen time to watch tales that would teach them these values.
The recent Disney flicks
This year Disney has released two really attractive movies for children – Aladdin and Lion King. Apart from earning Disney millions of dollars, these movies also help our kids learn a lot in a subtle way. A kid watching Aladdin is not only charmed by the colourful spectacles, flying mats and the wish-granting genie on screen. At the subconscious level, the values of being truthful and being optimistic even in the times of great hardship registers in the minds of our children. The tale of a poor bloke making it big would teach them that one could achieve anything with a good mind and intent. They would also learn the value and beauty of human relations.
Lion King has been a favourite among kids of the past generation. Disney brought in a reboot this year with enhanced visual effects. The movie “Lion King” is a thrilling watch for any child. Here again subconsciously our children would register a lot. The father-son bond between Mufasa and Simba, the ideals of honour, the courage to stand up to injustice, the beauty of friendship and many other things.
Both these movies also teach our kids that even the good guys make mistakes. But at the end of the day, those guys make up for their mistakes and that’s why they are the real heroes.
Let your kids be kids. Amidst the tuitions, classes and all other activities, give them a break. Take them to the movies when a good animated or kid’s movie hits the screens. Let them have a little bit of kid time. Let them create a few memories that they can look back upon and cherish in 10-15 years from now!
