“But what about my exams?”
Over the past few weeks, many parents might have had their children ask them this question. A large number of students as well as their parents are concerned about the major upcoming examinations. Many are preparing to sit for exams such as the PSLE, O Levels, A-Levels and the IB 12 Year Diploma this year. A few students and parents have started to be in the ‘prep mode’ the moment COVID-19 hit.
What has happened?
Covid-19 has brought life to a standstill. Inevitably, the field of education has been hit as well. Across the world, students are experiencing a period of uncertainty. Examinations have been postponed and academic calendars have been reworked across nations.
In Singapore, circuit breaker measures kicked in on 7 April 2020 and were initially meant to last till 4 May 2020. However, the government has now announced an extension of these measures up to 1 June 2020. Mid-year examinations will not be held. Certain course deadlines and exam dates have also been rescheduled. Home-based Learning (HBL) has been the norm adopted by schools since the circuit breaker measures kicked in.
However, there are disparities in the way schools are conducting HBL. Some have adopted an online approach that mimics the conventional classroom model. Others have chosen to give more stress on homework and related activities. Many parents and students are worried. These exams that are coming up this year will be crucial in determining the future of many and right now, things are looking one part tentative, three parts bleak.
How to deal with it?
Things are not normal. Regardless of whether they will ever return to normalcy (we highly question this), we need to accept this. But how can we do that? The first step is to take a step back, relax and take a deep breath. Panicking and worry have no use in this instance!
How do we deal with the current restrictions? We have to customise the learning process. Parents must ensure that they provide their children with a proper learning environment. Pick out a place within your home that is conducive for studies. Make sure that your child is not disturbed by unwanted noise or other kinds of disturbance while he is studying.
But what about doubts regarding the subjects? Do not hesitate to let your children clear their doubts with their teachers. This is also a time when you can make use of online tutors and e-learning solutions. Register for a quality online tutoring course to ensure that your kid always remains motivated and covers the required syllabus effectively. Whether kids are taking the PSLE or the GCE ‘O’ Levels, there will definitely be
e-learning programmes that can support them!
Staying Calm
It goes without saying that remaining calm will be extremely important during this period. Are you paying close attention to your kids? If you aren’t, then please start keeping an eye on them. Look for signs of anxiety, irritation or anger. The inability to go outside and the concern about exams might cause a significant amount of emotional stress in kids. Parents should try to spot this and address it at the initial stage itself.
Speak to your kids. Tell them it’s all going to be ok. Make sure that your kids get an adequate amount of sleep. Ensure that they have a balanced diet and do not pick up bad food habits during this phase. Watch out for stress eating as well. To do all this, parents themselves must be able to remain calm. Both parents and kids can indulge in activities such as yoga, Zumba and meditation which can help keep you in sound health physically, mentally and emotionally.
Rediscover yourself!
Procrastinate no more!
This is a challenging period. But we should never let the negativity get to us. For those who are taking important exams this year, there is a lot of ground that you can cover during this period when you are at home. Do not let your spirits fall. Make use of all available resources and cover as much ground as you can.
“My advice is, never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.” – Charles Dickens ‘David Copperfield’
