Yes, it’s a brand new year. 2021 is here folks!
So, what normally happens around the new year? Well, we send out wishes to our friends and family and of course, we celebrate! But there is one other, an equally popular ritual associated with the new year – ‘the new year’s resolutions’.
Promises for a better year
What is a new year’s resolution? A new year’s resolution is basically a decision or promises that you make to yourself stating that you would do a particular thing during the year. This can be quitting a bad habit of yours, deciding to practice a new habit that is good for you or setting out to achieve a goal that you resolve to work for and achieve during the course of the year.
Now, resolutions can be anything from deciding to quit your habit of skipping meals to resolving to decide to save up to buy a new car. New year’s resolutions depend upon the individuals taking the resolutions and their priorities. For our school-going kids, their new year’s resolutions could be stuff like working extra hard to score top-notch grades in math or putting in that extra effort at some co-curricular activity. It could also be something like finishing a book list or engaging in physical activity regularly.
Sounds good, right?
Ya, it all sounds good in theory, but the problems pop-up when you get to the part where you put things into practice.
Do people keep their resolutions?
Speak about setting new year’s resolutions to your friends or family and you are sure to find at least some skeptics who just don’t believe in the whole arrangement. Why? In most cases, it’s because they think that no one keeps up their new year’s resolutions.
So don’t people actually stay true to their new year’s resolutions? Well… there is a significant share of transgressions here. This is exactly why you need to set up a clear framework that helps you beat the temptations to abandon your well-intentioned resolutions.
It should make sense
Ok, so here’s rule number one. Make sure that your resolutions are not unachievable or unrealistic. Now, we are not telling you to stop dreaming big or anything like that. What we mean is that don’t go about making resolutions like ‘I am going to study 20 hours a day every day this year’. Not only would you be unable to keep up such resolutions but the initial enthusiasm for sticking to such resolutions would impact your physical, emotional, and psychological well-being in a bad way. Go for a more targeted goal, that is more achievable rather than idealistic. So dream big, but keep your feet grounded and your common sense active while making your resolutions. This will help you in staying loyal to your resolutions throughout the year.
Remind, remind, remind
The more you tend to forget about something, the less committed you will be about it. So always keep yourself reminded about your resolutions. Making mental notes might not always be sufficient. You can try pasting sticky notes with your resolutions written out on them and paste the same in places that you would notice on a daily basis. You could also write your resolutions down on the first page of your diary and read them every time you open your diary.
Get yourself a human reminder
You could even entrust someone close to you with the responsibility to remind you of your resolutions if at any point you appear to be backtracking. Parents can take up this responsibility with their children. Having an external monitor can make you more accountable and give you a better chance of sticking to your resolutions.
Keep track of the progress
A year is indeed a long period of time. This long time factor is another reason why resolutions fail to be honored. How do you tide over this? Wherever possible, as part of your resolution make certain targets that have to be achieved every few weeks or months. Make sure that you stick to these periodic targets and track your progress.
Setting new year’s resolutions can help us improve ourselves in multiple domains. With a bit of vision and effort, we can surely end up honoring our resolutions as well.
All the best everyone, happy new year! 🙂
