The skills that are needed to tackle such scenarios are not something that you would necessarily acquire as part of your preparations for the PSLE or any other academic examination. But these skills are as relevant as the academic and technical knowledge that we acquire as part of our education.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) has always been important, ever since civilizational or social life began. What is EI?
EI is the ability to recognize, evaluate and respond to emotions, both your own as well as those of people around you in a tactful and healthy manner. How does this help everyone?
Imagine preparing for an all-important examination and freaking out in this process. You might feel the emotion of fear, you might be under a lot of stress or anxiety, and a range of other emotions that need regulation. You need EI here if you wish to get your preparation on track.
Imagine you are the leader of a group at your workplace and that some of your employees have turned hostile due to the stress from a new work assignment and are not doing their work properly. In this scenario as well, you need EI to save the day.
What about when you have a fight or argument with one of your loved ones? During these moments, what do you say or not say? Without EI, such instances are going to be as dreadful as they can get.
In short, to lead a happy and successful life, we need to possess EI. Yes, now that we have stated all that, how do you gain the adequate EI?
Boosting your EI – the path of contemplation
You might have realized this by this point in time – EI cannot be mastered through some crash course or learning hack. This vital life skill needs a holistic and consistent approach to be mastered. Parents, family, society, and schools all have their part to play in this endeavour.
There are quite a few things that can be done at the individual level to hone your EI.
The first thing is contemplation. Emotions originate from within and to gauge them accurately, one needs to look within. What does that mean? You’ve just got to take some time off and think about your emotions. Suppose you just got really angry and lashed out at someone. Sit down and think about what made you behave in such a manner and understand the underlying emotion that was driving your actions. This will help ensure that such instances can be avoided in the future. Parents should encourage their kids to practice singing exercises as well.
Moving forward, you can start putting yourself in the shoes of others and analyse their emotions and the responses that rose out of them. You need to understand yourself and try to understand others.
Put some time into it
You can try improving your knowledge about EI and the ways it works by reading content in the form of books, blogs, etc which are related to the topic. Our classrooms must also be centers for imparting EI into young minds. EI enhancing activities must be conducted within classrooms on a frequent basis.
To manage the stress and competition that is associated with today’s world, you need EI. It helps you tide over issues such as depression, anxiety, etc and ensures that you are able to maintain healthy relationships in both personal and professional domains.
There simply is no way around EI today. You cannot succeed simply with IQ or technical skills. EI is needed to ensure that you can manage the realities of the present-day world. Thankfully, with some targeted efforts EI can be boosted significantly. So, it is indeed important to give our kids an EI boost! 🙂
