Let’s start off with a bit of disputed history (Don’t panic). In many traditions, it is believed that God created man first and that it was only afterwards that the first woman was created. Well, in all likelihood, the creation of women meant that God got it right the second time around. Evidence from the long history of human existence does, in fact, suggest that God got it right the second time.
March is around the corner once again and the world readies itself to celebrate another Women’s day on the 8th of March. This annual celebration of womanhood is over a hundred years old and its relevance still remains intact even though the world around has progressed by great leaps and bounds.
How do things stand?
International Women’s Day offers a chance for the whole world to take notice and salute the women who have been carrying the entire human race on their shoulders all through the ages. However, regardless of the efforts, has the world been grateful to its mothers, sisters, wives and daughters? The answer is before our own very eyes. Even in the most developed countries, the economic status of women continues to lag behind that of men. Move out of the developed world and things only get grimmer. Female foeticide and other grave atrocities still thrive at a great number of locations around the globe.
But have we not done anything for this? Yes, we have and as a result of this, the status of women has improved considerably well over the past few decades. We have had women occupy some of the most important offices of political and corporate power. But the fact remains that more needs to be done.
A way forward
Let’s ask ourselves something. What comes to our mind when we think about a woman? What does the average woman look like in each of our opinions? It’s safe to assume that a large number of people add a lot of limitations to the word ‘woman’ even in this modern age.
This year’s themes
Women’s Day is not exclusive to any geographical or organisational entity. It is celebrated by one and all. That shouldn’t come as a surprise when the day is meant to celebrate nearly half the people on the planet. The UN’s theme for this year’s Women’s Day is ‘Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change’ while Rotary International has gone with ‘Balance for Better’. Both highlight similar needs and challenges.
As we near the month of March let us all, both men and women strive to create a more equal world. Let us not be content with the baby steps that we have taken so far in this regard. To all the ladies out there, thank you for making the world a better place. Celebrate your womanhood not just on the 8th of March, but on every day of every year.
Happy Women’s Day!.
