“Drats!” A common exclamation uttered by students when examination time is around the corner. With that, the looming feeling of dread overwhelms students as they prepare for the highlight of semester two – the end-of-year examinations.
With the last-minute revision, cramming of information and content just the night before the exams, these tactics usually form the base of the usual exam routine. Tensions can soar, tempers can rise, and the usual humdrum days can suddenly seem very chaotic.
Does this always have to be the case though? Feeling overwhelmed during exams does not necessarily have to be a rule. Here are some tips that you can do to make sure that you stay on top of things during exam time!
Plan Vs Panic
“My advice is, never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.” – Charles Dickens ‘David Copperfield’
What is the main reason for panic? It is the feeling that you may be unprepared or underprepared. What does that mean? It means that if you are well-prepared for any exam, the chances of getting panicked are drastically reduced. In other words, what we are suggesting is to plan an effective study and revision plan which helps you cover the topics for the exam in a time-bound manner and convinces yourself that you are prepared to take the exams.
Keep in mind a few basics here:
- Plan well in advance
- Keep in mind your strengths and weaknesses
- Make use of the most efficient learning resources. Try including online videos in your learning itinerary to grasp concepts that you couldn’t get the hang of in your classrooms.
- Revise religiously and practice an adequate number of mock tests
What can parents do?
- What can parents do to ensure that their kids aren’t overburdened by stress or anxiety during the exams? The best thing that they can do is to listen and to encourage their youngsters to speak up. To all the parents out there, during the upcoming exam seasons, let’s make ourselves available for our kids, let’s be their support systems.
- But first, parents themselves must stick to a golden rule. Now, what is this rule? ‘DON’T PANIC’. Keep yourselves calm and composed and help your kids be the same.
Don’t forget to take care of yourselves
- One of the common things that we see during exams is the tendency to overwork oneself. Both parents and students must be wary of this harmful tendency. Always take proper care of yourself (even if you are facing an all-important or life-changing exam).
- Taking care of yourself includes having an adequate amount of food and getting the right amount of sleep. Trust us when we say that you do not want to be running low on food or sleep during your exams. Your mind and body can only function at the optimal level when you give it the necessary fuel – food and sleep.
You deserve breaks
- Yes, you deserve breaks! You deserve breaks even during your exam preparation. Now, as the exams near, we would normally cut down on the duration of the breaks that we award ourselves. But however short they may be, we must never completely abandon breaks. Your mind and body need at least a few minutes to cool off. Closer to the exams it is advisable that you stay off social media as it has the ability to keep users glued to their screens for a lot more time than they actually plan to.
Stretch a muscle
- Have a short work-out routine or indulge in some other physical activity. Spending some time for physical activity can improve your efficiency while studying. You could also try out a bit of yoga or meditation to calm your nerves during the high-intensity exam season.
- The exam season can surely get stressful. But parents and students must prepare in advance for this. The best thing that you can do is to keep your composure. Don’t let the panic get to you. Remember that you have prepared well enough for the exams. You have done the groundwork. Tell yourself this and remind yourself that there really isn’t much to get overstressed about. To all those who are taking the exams soon, all the best! Trust us, you’ve got this!
