Before we delve into the topic of realistic dreams, it is important for us to understand what “unrealistic dreams” are. Unrealistic dreams are those that are out of the norm and are seen as highly unachievable because of the intricacies involved. For example, a dream to become a scientist at the age of 15 can be an unrealistic dream.
Ever since children have been spending a major part of their daily lives on social media, children start coming up with these dreams – these might seem totally normal to them, but then might not be possible for them. If we encourage our children to work for the unrealistic dreams they have, which may be challenging to achieve, it is going to pull down their confidence level drastically.
So, as parents, it is important for our children to have realistic dreams for the future. Every moment your children step closer towards their goals and dreams, it will give them a sense of satisfaction and immense confidence.
In this blog, we have come up with five pointers that will help your children set realistic dreams for their future.
Talk to them about their future plans
Never impose your dreams or thoughts on your children. Have a casual chat with your children on what their interests are and how they would like to see themselves in the next 5-10 years. These are conversations that will help your children better know about themselves, and in turn, you will be able to guide them in the right direction.
For example, if your child wants to become an athlete, start telling them stories about famous athletes, their lifestyle and major achievements of theirs. This will inspire them further to set their foot in the right path. If they start talking about very unrealistic aspirations, do not directly stop them. Make them realise that the dreams aren’t achievable by telling them real-life happenings and also share your personal experiences.
Be a good narrator of your own dreams
To make sure your child comes up with realistic dreams for their future, you need to play a critical role as well. You have to share with your children the dreams you had as a child and how it gradually evolved and made you the person you are now. Make sure you share both the positives and negatives. While sharing the negatives, make sure that you say it in a subtle manner. Ensure that the incidences you share do not demotivate your children from setting life goals.
Offer unparalleled support
For your children to be entirely open to you, you need to constantly offer them your support and love. Your continuous support will make them openly share all their daily occurrences and also the issues they face. Show them that you will always be there for them, encourage and praise them when they achieve their goals.
A simple appreciation can help boost the morale and confidence level of your children. Even if they have excelled in a class test or a competition among friends, congratulate them. Teachers and parents play a key role in helping children plan their future effectively.
Once children are gifted with constant support, they will be more frank with you about their future goals. Talk to them about their interests and what excites them the most. Based on the conversations you have with them, suggest suitable career choices and other future choices. Only provide “suggestions.” The person who makes the final decision should always be your child.
Educate them
Education is not just about what our children learn within the four walls of a classroom, It is much beyond that. Providing your children the right education is a great way for them to try out different activities and see if they actually interest them. It provides them a chance to work towards their dreams. Also, make sure you support your children in their quest towards achieving their dreams. For example, if your child wants to become the best tennis player in the world, find him/her an experienced tennis coach. Let them learn from the best and try to achieve big things. There are several online learning sites available for children to widen their knowledge. If your children are interested in any specific topic, widen their understanding in that specific domain. Even if your child realises they don’t like it or don’t wish to pursue it, they will still gain something from the experience. This will also help them shape their approach in defining future goals.
Embrace failure
It’s important for us to celebrate failure the same way we tend to celebrate success. You need to let your children experience the negative feelings that come with failure. This is a very important quality which needs to be taught to our children right from an early age. You need to encourage your children to pick themselves up and give their fullest despite facing failure. We need to let them try and support them along the way instead of shying them away from challenges. Once you do this, your children will be able to give their fullest in each and every activity that they do. They will be open to new challenges in their life which will then open new doors of opportunities for your children.
As parents, it is our duty to help our children have realistic dreams for their future. We need to provide constant support and love to help them face the obstacles that are in their way. On the long go, our children will become more resilient and start working on their future dreams effectively than ever before.
We hope that this blog helps you support your children and guide them towards picking realistic goals and pursue them with zero compromises. All the best! 🙂
