As the June holidays have come and gone, parents and children are back to the tight schedule of school time. So, three weeks into the new term, let us look at how you can help your children make it a productive one.
Create goals and track them
The beginning of a new term is the best time to set goals and plan how to achieve them. Throughout this term, you can help your children track it and help them keep up with their set targets. It will help them break down the tasks they have and also get rid of the overload during exam time.
Time to reflect
Reflect and Rethink the last terms. Ask your children to spend time analysing their actions and performance in the previous school term. Ask them to identify what they did right and what they did wrong. Help them rethink their old strategies and create plans to counter any issues they have.
Get back to a proper sleeping schedule
We are sure that throughout the holidays, the sleeping schedule of your children might have been chaotic. Make sure they are off to bed on time and also that they get enough sleep. Ask them to put away their digital devices and end all screen time at least an hour before bedtime. Without proper sleep, they won’t be able to concentrate in class which will also affect their health adversely. If they are not already sleeping earlier, it’s time to get them to start.
Discipline
Self-control and discipline are more important to a student than anything else. Help and support your children to practise a disciplined lifestyle where they do not slack off. They should be able to utilise each and every minute they have productively. Make sure they have a proper schedule and routine to follow. It will help them get their lives under control and grow up to be disciplined individuals.
Work on your basics
The main reason why many students find a few subjects difficult to understand is because they don’t have the basics covered. For example; you can’t expect your children to solve complex mathematical problems without them knowing how the number system and basic arithmetic work. It is the case for all the subjects. So, make use of this time during the holidays to brush up on the basics and create a solid foundation for your children to improve their academic performance. Even if it seems like a waste of time, the time spent doing this will help you save more time in the future.
Stock up on school supplies
Make sure you have everything ready for your children. Stationary, uniforms, and any other things your children require. Stock up on things that are frequently required so you don’t have to go to the store to pick them up frequently.
Watch out for their health
Make sure your children are healthy and fit when entering a new term. Only a healthy body can have a healthy mind. Do watch out for their health during the holidays. Make sure they stick to a proper sleep cycle. Make sure that they follow a balanced diet at all times. Encourage them to go out and play too. It is vital that they have social interaction and also spend time outdoors to grow up to be emotionally and mentally healthy adults.
Remind your children to have fun at school
These are precious years of their lives. Advise them that they shouldn’t be too caught up thinking only about their grades that they forget to have fun and create friendships. Give them the freedom to explore and also encourage them to do so too.
Hygiene and food
The pandemic has been a harsh reminder of how health and hygiene need to be given more attention. Remind them to wash their hands frequently at regular intervals. Tell them to use sanitisers after touching objects in public places and use wipes to clean their seats and things. Ensure that they change out of the dress they wore to school once they return back home. It is better to ask them to take a hot shower as soon as they come home.
Talk to your children regularly about school
Children can be stressed or might be facing issues at school that they might be unaware of. Make it a habit to spend some time every day talking to your children about their school life. Make them comfortable and also listen without judgement. You might be able to help make your child’s school experience a whole lot better. Also, make it a point to keep in touch with your child’s teachers regularly. But try not to get involved too much to the point of becoming obsessive.
We hope these tips are of help to you, and wish your children a productive term three! 🙂
