Finished your Secondary school education? Not keen on pursuing a junior college or polytechnic education? Thinking of enrolling in a private education institution? Well, there are plenty of choices, especially in an education hub like Singapore! There are about 1000 private schools in Singapore that offer you a wide variety of courses. There are courses at the certificate, diploma, bachelor, and postgraduate levels. Some private schools also offer various external degree programs through partnerships with overseas universities from countries such as the US, UK, Australia, and others. The degrees are awarded by these corresponding partner universities. It allows students to pursue a degree from a foreign university in an affordable manner. But, the thing to note is that the quality of the private education sector in Singapore is very varying. So, careful analysis is needed before zeroing in on an institution to join.
Things to keep in mind
Accreditation
All the private schools have to be registered with the CPE under the Private Education Act. It requires the schools to disclose information on themselves and the services they provide, such as their administrative board, registration, registration validity period, courses offered, faculty, fees, facilities, and refund policy. The information regarding all this can be found on the CPE website so that it is easily accessible by any student looking to enrol in an institution.
Make sure that the institution you’re enrolling in is registered and its registration has not expired. This is very important as failing to take this into account can result in you getting a degree that is not recognized by the government or potential employers and will make you ineligible for any jobs.
Quality of education
Check out the ranking of the institution locally and globally. You can do this by checking global rankings published by various agencies like “QS World University Rankings” published by the Quacquarelli Symonds Limited. Make sure that the institution and the associated university are both good.
Also, find out if the institution has been EduTrust certified. It is a voluntary quality assurance scheme administered by the CPE. It assesses a private school’s academic processes, corporate governance and administration, quality management, and the protection and welfare of students. It was introduced to raise the standards of education and student welfare. An institution with the EduTrust certification promises a better environment for your growth.
Courses
Do some research about the course that you want to enrol in, and whether they are speciailised in any course. Check the university rankings for the course that you want to enrol in. Even if the university has a lower ranking overall, it might have a high rank for a specific course. Also, an EduTrust certification doesn’t take into consideration the contents of the course offered. So, do a detailed research about the course you want to opt for. Check whether you have the necessary qualifications needed to enrol in it, whether you can meet the demands of the course, how much time it would take to complete the course, whether you can retake exams, re-enrol to classes, change courses, or schools midway. Make sure you look into all these before joining.
Campus and faculty
A good campus atmosphere is very important too. Check out the extracurricular activities and student activities on campus. If possible, visit the campus in person and see for yourself all it has to offer. Another thing to consider is the student population of an institution. It is always good to have exposure to a diverse pool of students. It would do you good to select an institution with students that are from diverse backgrounds or places. It would give you better experiences and knowledge. Institutions like the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) have huge campuses that offer students all sorts of facilities like gyms, sporting facilities, dance halls and so on. SIM and many other institutions also provide opportunities for their students to participate in industry projects and visit various educational conferences all over the world to provide them exposure.
The faculty is also an important factor for you to consider. Try to know if the faculty is reputed and has proper qualifications. If the institution is affiliated with a foreign university, the classes might be handled by both teachers in the local campus as well as from the foreign main campus. Find out how many classes are taken by them. More classes by the main campus faculty will be advantageous for you.
Internships and Placements
Career prospects are also important. Check out how many of the previous pass-outs have gotten employed. The placement opportunities have to be checked. Also, try to find out whether the institution provides internships with or on-the-job training with companies. Every year, individual universities and the CPE publish survey results on the percentage of employed pass-outs from institutions and graduation rates. Take a look at this information before enrolling. If you can, get in touch with an alumnus and get to know their experience in the institution.
Fee Structure
Check out the fee structure beforehand and make sure that it’s value for money. Check for any possible scholarships or grants that the institution may provide. In the unfortunate case that you need to leave a course halfway, you might not be refunded fully. So, make sure you know about the refund policies too.
Selecting a good institution is very much important in securing a good career. Visit the CPE and the university’s websites to know all specific details about an institution. So, keep all this in mind and make the wise decision. All the best! 🙂
