The new year has come and gone, and a brand-new school term has just begun, jolting many parents and children back to the reality of having to deal with the hustle and bustle of school. With the new year comes the promise of fresh lessons, a harder level of homework, new classmates, and most importantly, being in a new environment.
Whether students are facing their PSLE this year, or they are transiting into a new school and class, a new learning environment may affect your child’s performance in the coming academic year. Here are some simple actions that can be done to ease them into their new surroundings and help them to adjust better.
Ask them about their day
This is such an easy thing to do, and it can be so important. All it takes is five minutes of your day. Just as easy, though, is for a kid to respond, “Good,” or “Okay.” Don’t let the conversation end with such a short response! It will be good for kids to share with you any difficulties that they face in school —other kids are being mean, the teacher is too strict, the work is too hard. While kids are willing to talk about everything other than the challenges they face in school, it appears that they are unwilling to share about any difficulties that they encounter.
They might feel it’s too small a thing to bring up or feel embarrassed about it. This is when the daily conversations of wanting to know everything about their day is important. If they respond with one word, probe them to say more—to list of three things that happened that day, for example, or to tell you one thing they liked, one thing they didn’t like, and one thing they could change.
Take note of who their friends are
For young children, the most important part about school very often is their friends, it determines whether they look forward or dread going to school. In fact, it’s likely they’re just as worried about whether their best friend is in their class or whether they’re invited to play with the new kid. Don’t dismiss their concerns. Healthy social relationships are vital to your child’s emotional development and maturity. As important as academics are, especially in the first couple days of school, keep an eye on who your child is spending time with as well as what they’re learning.
Trust the teachers
At the beginning of the year, every parent has questions that may include how classes are going to be taught, how homework will be handed out, how preparation will take place for exams. But remember that teachers are busy and stressed too, and that asking for daily updates on your child’s progress can irritate them more than it can help. Remember that they’re trained for this and are fully prepared to do their jobs. They’ve been dealing with children a long time, and know how to handle them. That being said, if you notice any patterns in your child’s behavior—they seem more scared than usual, for example, or less willing to go to school—and you think a teacher may be overstepping the line, don’t be afraid to have a conversation with them. At the end of the day, they are there to help your children be the best students they can.
Most importantly, go into this new school year with energy and excitement. There are new lessons to absorb and new things to explore—a wonderful semester of learning lies ahead!
