We all speak a lot about the stress children (as well as parents) experience during the run-up to their exams. But how many discussions do we have on the stress that they experience post these exams? Post exam stress is a reality and many of our children fall victim to it. Therefore, there needs to be more discussion about it and parents need to be prepared for dealing with such situations
The Reasons and Manifestations
What are the causes of post-exam stress? There are multiple causes. Kids can fall prey to it irrespective of how well or badly they performed in the examination. A kid who performed well might get stressed out if he overthinks about the results and gets constantly reminded about the possibility that he might not get the results that he expects to get. A kid who performed badly might get stressed out thinking about how his parents might react to his below-par results. The high expectations of others and the fear of failure are some of the main reasons behind post-exam stress.
Just like how the reasons vary, the manifestations are also many. They can appear in the form of loss of sleep, stress eating, reduced enthusiasm, falling ill and so on.
Accept it!
Is there any use of pondering over the exams once they are done? No. Teach your kids to understand this. Once the exams are finished sit them down and try speaking to them. Your kids would have an idea about how they fared. If they did not prepare well enough then make them accept it. They should also be made to take a resolve about working harder for the next time. If your kid worked hard and did well then tell him that he has done everything in his power to ace the tests. The quicker they accept the facts the quicker it becomes to move forward.
Take Their Minds Off It
Your kid deserves a break after the exams. This relaxation also helps to keep him preoccupied with something else rather than fixating his thoughts on the exams and results. Go on a trip, take him out for a movie or get him into a new hobby. Spending time on physical exercise is a good option. It helps keep your kid’s body fit as well. Bring in something positive that can keep your child’s mind off stressful things.
Be Realistic About Your Expectations
As parents, we might often overburden our kids with unrealistic expectations. We should be aware of the qualities and capabilities of our kids, shouldn’t we? Yes, we should motivate them to better themselves. But we should not put unrealistic expectations on their shoulders. This is not motivation. Make sure that your child is not stressed out because of you.
Positive Media
There is a large amount of motivational and inspirational content available out there. Get your kid a good inspirational book or get him to watch a good movie that can lift up one’s spirits. All this not only serves as a means to combat exam stress but also ensures that your kid becomes a better person and carries along with some useful values for life.
Post exam stress should not be allowed to ruin the lives of you and your kids. If left unaddressed this can turn into a major problem that sticks with your child for life. Therefore, we as parents must be more cautious and proactive in dealing with this menace in such a manner that we are able to nip it in the bud.
