How to Eat Healthy During School Term

The first week of school has flashed by, and already we are starting to notice that kids are getting bored of school food. Have they started asking you to prepare their recess snacks yet? Well, if they have, here are some ideas of what to put in those recess boxes to encourage healthy food habits.

Firstly, start involving the kids in planning and preparing for their own snack boxes. Give them an opportunity to learn about healthy eating and also, to make independent decisions about what they will eat during the day.

Involve your kids in healthier choices

Some ways include:
1. Discuss healthier food and drink choices and decide what your kids want to eat during recess time.
2. Write a shopping list together. Take your children shopping and let them choose foods and drinks from the shopping list.
3. Encourage participation from your children to help them prepare their snack boxes. Getting them to help with making sandwiches or cutting up fruits not only allows them the freedom to choose their snacks, but also creates good bonding time with them.

The Health Promotion Board has put together some sample snack ideas that kids can have during their breaks.

Canteen Choices

Children being children, love to go for the option that tastes best. They may choose the healthier option of fried chicken over steamed chicken for their chicken rice. They may choose to drink Coca Cola over plain water. However, we should make it a point to help them recognize the importance of eating healthy meals that consist of the following

  • Fresh fruit
  • Fresh crunchy vegetables (or at least, include some greens in their meals)
  • Milk, yoghurt or cheese (For children who cannot tolerate milk products, teach them to select alternatives like soy milk)
  • A meat or meat alternative food like some lean meat (e.g. chicken strips), hard-boiled egg or peanut butter.
  • Energy food products like bread, a roll, flat bread, fruit bread or crackers (wholegrain or wholemeal choices are best)
  • Plain water (instead of sugary drinks)

With the increasing time spent at school, we should teach our kids how to plan and select healthier and more nutritious food choices. Virginia Woolf once said, One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. Let’s teach our kids how to have better food choices so that they can live well!
