How to ensure kids are happy and healthy?
“The most beautiful sight in the world is a smiling kid and the most precious sound to hear is a kid’s laugh.”
Every parent wants their child to be healthy and happy. As a parent, the greatest legacy you can leave behind for your children are happy memories created together and the adventures you went on together. A happy childhood will help your children grow up to be resilient, empathetic, and independent people. The ever-changing dynamics of family and life make it harder to keep track of what is important and what is not.
The shifts in lifestyles have made everyone more unhappy and unhealthy. Children and parents both spend most of their time together staring at electronic screens. Family dinners take place in front of the television now. Children have disrupted sleep schedules. Screen addiction, depression, and stress are common among young children today. And the lack of physical activity is making everyone more prone to health issues. More children are diagnosed with eating disorders or obesity now more than ever. These are all concerning facts. What are the possible actions you, as a parent, can take?
Reduced Screen Time
Increased screen time is the main reason behind many of the physical and mental issues plaguing our children today. Many parents give their young children mobiles and tablets so they won’t be disturbed. Once they start using it and develop an interest, they are more likely to get addicted. Like in everything, moderation is the key here too. The use of these digital devices doesn’t have to be banned outright. You just have to ensure they use it responsibly and develop self-control.
Screen addiction causes children to lose sleep and even causes low academic performance. If left uncontrolled, it can even affect their mental health.
Exercise and Meditation
Get your children to start working out. Take them for a brisk walk every morning. Lead by example, so your children are motivated. You can also teach them meditation and mindfulness exercises. They are proven to help a person calm down and have clear thoughts.
Proper Sleep Schedule
Ensure your children keep to a proper sleep schedule. It is very vital for their physical, mental, and emotional development. Continuous lack of sleep will make your children prone to outbursts, temper tantrums, low academic performance. Make sure they stop using their phones or tabs once they are in bed.
More family time
Spend quality time with your children. In many households, both parents might have jobs, and the time when everyone is at home together will be in the morning when they wake up and at night when everyone goes back to bed. For such parents, express how much you love your children whenever you get to be with them. Ask your children how their day was, what they learned at school, how their friends are, and so on. It will make them happy to see you pay attention to them.
Go on a family vacation once in a while. You won’t be getting back these precious opportunities. Make sure you enjoy them whenever you can. Don’t be overly engrossed in work and chase behind more work achievements at the cost of your personal life.
Encourage children to go outside
Nowadays, children rarely go out to play. Tell your children to go out to the playground or park and play with their friends. Encourage them to be friends with children in the neighbourhood. It will motivate them to go out and spend time outside.
Healthy diet
Unhealthy eating habits are yet another thing we have to be aware of. Working parents give their children lunch money to buy food or snacks to eat at the school canteen. Even when they get back home, preprocessed or junk foods are given as snacks. Try to get them to eat as healthy as possible. Buy and store fruits and healthy snacks that you can pack for your children to school.
Find hobbies that don’t involve electronic devices or any form of technology
Check if your kids would be interested in drawing, making crafts, or any other activity that makes them use their imagination. Try gifting them books to see if they are interested in reading. It might open a whole new world to them.
Teach them to do household chores
This can help create good habits and work culture in children. They might complain at first about having to do chores, but once they get used to it, they will come to see why you insisted on doing it.
Try out these and let us know how they worked for you. We wish you and your children all the best! 🙂
