“So much to study and so little time left!”
How often have we said this during childhood and how often are we hearing this very same line from our children now?
It’s exam time once again, and parents and students are feeling the pressure. Everyone is busy preparing for it. But, students and parents both need to make sure that the preparations go on well and not end up as wasted efforts. For this, ensure that the stress is not getting to you and you’re not distracted by things around you. Also, working hard doesn’t cut it anymore. You have to make sure your child inclines more towards working smart.
How can you help your child prepare well and study effectively?
Focus on the basics
Unless they know the basics, they won’t be able to understand the subject. The basics are like the alphabets; unless you know it, you can’t learn the language. Parents should try to make sure that their children understand the basic concepts of what they’re studying and are not just memorising them by heart.
Choose a good spot to study
The learning atmosphere is crucial. Choose someplace where they’re comfortable and can concentrate properly. Use it only for learning and nothing else. It will help the brain associate it with studying, and when they are there, the brain will automatically be able to focus.
Make a plan and stick to it
Having a plan is essential to succeed. If there is a plan, there is no need to waste time every day deciding what it is they’re going to do. Try to help your child in making a plan and following it. Take the subjects and split them down, and assign days for different revision plans.
Switch things up
Studying the same topic for a long time can be monotonous. When you help them plan their study sessions, mix things up, so they switch the subject after set periods. But make sure that it doesn’t confuse them.
Write and then read aloud
Tell your children not just to read the topics in their minds. Instead, make them note down the main points and then read them out aloud. It is even better if they read them out as if they’re teaching someone. You learn better when you’re explaining something to someone. Try it out.
Take breaks
Studying continuously for hours doesn’t do any good. People can’t concentrate for long periods, and thus the study sessions will be ineffective. What you can do is break the study sessions into periods with breaks in between. It will keep the children refreshed and will help them concentrate better.
Take care of their health
Students often neglect their health during exam time. Losing sleep and missing meals to study becomes a habit during exam season. A healthy mind cannot exist in an unhealthy body. However much they prepared wouldn’t matter if they’re not feeling well and unable to take the exams while they are in the pink of health. So, be sure to keep an eye on their health while preparing for the exams. Make sure they sleep well, exercise, and meditate. These can help in keeping them healthy as well as aid in concentrating and studying better.
Phone and internet usage
Try to minimise their phone and internet usage during this time. Only allow them to use them for things to assist in the preparation. Stay away from social media. Try to make sure they never use them in the study area. Show them by example by minimising your phone usage. Don’t be all work and no play
Exam time doesn’t mean that children have to stay away from everything fun and entertaining. Let them take breaks from studying and do things that they like. But, try doing things that don’t involve your phone or internet. Read a book, go out, and have small play sessions with siblings or friends. You can let them play board games or even try a hand at some gardening. These activities help destress and keep them refreshed.
Few more tips
- Your children are already under a lot of pressure on their own. Make sure you don’t add to it.
- Avoid constantly hovering over them. Just keep an eye on them. But, at the same time, give them the space they need.
- Try to lift their spirits when they feel down. Cooking their favourite foods, giving them pep talks, or even just lending your ear for them to vent out their frustrations can be very helpful.
- Tell them they are doing ok. Assurances from you can vastly increase their motivation.
Hello, Mothers!
Parents go through stress during exam times as much as the children themselves, especially mothers. They stay up with the children all night while they’re studying, taking care of all their needs, providing them with everything they need to concentrate only on their studies. They often ignore their own needs during that time. We cannot forget their efforts and sacrifices that play a vital role in making sure their children grow up successful and happy. It is Mother’s day this week. Let us take this time to be grateful to all the mothers out there. We wish you all a happy Mother’s Day! 🙂
Exam times are stressful. Preparing well for them takes effort. Students – try not to panic and follow your plans. That’s all you need to do. Parents – support your children in their preparation and don’t put too much pressure on them. We hope that these prove to be helpful for all parents and students.
88tuition wishes all students all the best for their upcoming exams! 🙂
