Let us start with a simple exercise. Think about a great personality from any field of endeavour. Have you? Ok now pick another famous personality but this time make sure that he/she is from another field. In a similar manner think about three more famous people from different fields. Are you done with your list? Now think about the qualities that all of them have in common. What do you get? Well, I would put my money on the line and say that each of those great people definitely had one thing in common that helped them scale the heights that they did – confidence in their abilities.
So, what was the point of this exercise? It was just to remind you that confidence is an essential ingredient for success and that we as parents are responsible to see to it that our kids do gain confidence in their abilities. So, some of our Primary Six kids have gotten back their Preliminary exam results. Yes, they may not have performed as well as hoped, hence, it’s time to help them create the self-belief in themselves again. But boosting your kid’s confidence is by no means an easy task. We are here to help you with some pointers in this matter.
Put appreciation and constructive criticism to good use
Give appreciation where it is due and help your child believe that he has the potential to get things done. While doing so make sure that you don’t get carried away with your words and make your children overconfident.
Another thing to watch out for is the way you mete out criticism. Make sure that you don’t end up scarring your child for life and denting his confidence. Remind yourself that the aim of criticism is always to get your child to improve. To put it in simpler words, constructive criticism is what’s going to help them in the long run.
Letting them use their wings
In how many matters do we grant our kids the freedom to make their own decisions? As they grow up, we should progressively increase the number of decisions that they are allowed to make on their own. Give them a chance to be in the driver’s seat and let them get to choose the destination. We, as parents, can be an effective guide in making sure that we travel along with them and give them the confidence to reach their desired goal.
Embracing failure and overcoming it with vigour
Everyone experiences the pangs of failure. Your kids will also have to encounter failures and if they aren’t taught the right way to handle these intense situations, it’s going to take a major hit at their confidence level. This can even lead to them seriously questioning their abilities. What do you do here? Well, you spend some time with them and let them understand that failures are just part of life and are by no means grounds for doubting their abilities. Make them understand that failures are just part of life and we should hit back at it with full confidence. One more thing that parents need to do is resist the habit of comparing your kid’s performance with that of his peers.
Inspiring young minds
There are tons of tales in history as well as in the present of ordinary individuals turning out to be extraordinary personalities. Introduce your kids to the great people who started out just like them but ended up making it big. Reading about such people or watching movies or videos about them will make your kids get inspired and feel that even they can do such great things in life.
Keep telling your kids that you believe in them
Sit your kid down and tell him that you believe in his abilities. Parents hold a great influence over the minds of kids and sometimes all that a kid wants is attention and recognition from parents. A kid who hears his parents say that he is good enough will more often than not take is as the truth and get his confidence level boosted.
Confidence is the key to success. If you don’t have the confidence in you, you are bound to be a slave of your uninspiring inner voices. As parents, we need to make sure that we ourselves set a good example to our children. Let’s not expose or express our work tension and family issues in front of our children. Instead, let us show them how we deal with these problems with confidence. Few years down the line, your children will obviously be facing tougher situations similar to the ones you are facing now, but there will be no need to worry. The lessons of confidence that you have intentionally or unintentionally taught your children will help them overcome these situations with ease!
